The Shipyard made a disastrous start to the season with a humiliating 5 goal defeat to Bowhill at Recreation Park. Both teams were under strength due to suspensions, unavailability and injury but it was Bowhill who won at a canter.
After an uneventful first 17 minutes Bowhill took the lead when a free-kick into the box was left by everyone for the unmarked Bowhill player to score easily. 3 minutes later it was 2 – 0 when again a ball into the box was not cleared and the Bowhill forward had the easiest of tasks to score. Johnston should have reduced the deficit when put through on goal by Bell but, his effort was well saved by Lennox. It was 3 – 0 in 28 minutes when the Shipyard defence switched off again to concede another soft goal. Bowhill scored another goal in the 33rd minute with the Shipyard defence posted missing yet again. A header from Bell that was easily saved was the only response from the shipyard as the first half closed.
Chalmers pulled off a good save at the start of the second half, pushing the ball round the post for a corner. In 56 minutes he was beaten again as Bowhill scored their fifth goal. There was to be no further scoring though sub Couper should have scored a consolation for the Shipyard but, Lennox saved with his legs. In the final minute T. Williams was sent off for his second bookable offence by referee Crichton who had a very good game.
