Burntisland Shipyard 0-4 Edinburgh College

Shippy slump to big defeat.

A much changed Shipyard eleven slumped to a heavy defeat against an Edinburgh College team that played with a quality that belied their lowly position in Conference X. Despite the backing of a bumper Friday night crowd the Shippy produced a below par performance as they created very little in the way of chances and they can have no complaints about the final outcome. Lewis Ross, Matty Miller, Shaun Keatings, Sam Glancy, Darrell Anthony and Ben Anthony all dropped out for various reasons and they were replaced by Lee Henderson, Dan Thomson, Mark James, Sandy Strang, Luke Mahady and Josh Urquhart with the latter making his first appearance since picking up an injury in early August.

A long-range effort from Edinburgh hit the top of Scott Costello’s crossbar while at the other end a Henderson drive was not too far wide of the target, that being the highlights of a dull opening forty minutes. Costello held a twenty yard drive and again Henderson was involved as his cross come shot had to be tipped over by College keeper Ciaran Cairns. Just before the break Costello did well, at full stretch, to tip away a ball that came off the head of his own player.

Costy was involved in the thick of the action.

There was more action in the second half as the visitors took the initiative and a ball to the back post might have been turned in had the forward been more alert. A flighted ball from the angle of the box landed on top of the net though it looked like Costello had it covered. In a rare Shipyard attack they should have taken the lead when half-time substitute B. Anthony engineered some space for himself but failed to hit the target as he dragged his shot just wide of the post. Back at the other end Craig Watt was in the right place at the right time to clear the ball off the line as the visitors once again pressed. Edinburgh finally broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute when Joe McBride headed home from twelve yards. The lead was doubled three minutes later when Mark McGovern drove his free-kick into the corner of the net. After a flurry of substitutions from both teams the Shippy conceded a sloppy third goal when a low ball across the box was turned in by Kriss Gaff from around six yards. As the game moved into added time the Shipyard conceded a fourth goal via the penalty spot after Costello brought down the College forward as he burst into the box. McGovern converted in what was the last kick of the match. After the match manager Dave Costello reflected “I made a lot of changes for tonight, which was always my intention, and it showed as we struggled to get any momentum. I didn’t think it was a 4-0 match, that being said, they were as good as anyone we have faced this season.”

Next Saturday we make the short trip to Dalgety Bay to face Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts in another League Cup Section D match. Kick-off is at 2pm.
