Burntisland Shipyard. 0 Cowdenbeath. 11

Shipyard thrashed by rampant Cowden

The Shipyard kicked off their competitive season with a humiliating 11-0 defeat to an excellent young Cowdenbeath side, which was supplemented by four first team players. Although still short of some players, it made no difference to the Shipyard as Cowden scored almost at will, particularly in the second half, as their superior ability and fitness showed.

It was one way traffic right from the start and Cowden opened the scoring in the 6th minute. Chalmers in the Shipyard goals made a couple of good saves and T. Williams blocked a goal bound shot before Cowden were awarded a penalty for a trip just inside the box. The penalty was duly dispatched to double the lead. A third goal followed shortly afterwards when a free-kick from the left was headed in. J. Williams did force a save from Flynn that resulted in a corner from a rare Shipyard attack. Just on half-time Ferguson bundled home Cowdenbeath’s fourth.

The second half saw the goals mount up as Cowden were running riot and to be fair to the Shipyard some of the goals were excellent strikes, though Chalmers got a hand to a couple of them. After the game a shell-shocked Billy Whitehead said “we got a lesson tonight from a very good team, as long as the boys learn from this and try to do that to other teams when we are on top I will be happy”.
