Burntisland Shipyard. 0 Kettle United. 2

The Shipyard today again struggled to field a team due to injury and unavailability, opponents Kettle United were also understrength, in what was a very low key match on a cold and windy afternoon in Burntisland.

The first few minutes of the game were very uneventful and it wasn’t until the 17th minute that the first chance was created when good link up play between Hamilton and Millar gave the latter a shooting chance but, he blasted over. A minute later Hamilton struck a free-kick from fully 30 yards but, it was straight at the keeper. Chalmers was first called into action a minute later and held the effort easily. In 23 minutes the Shipyard were hit with yet another injury blow when Chris Miller limped off to be replaced by manager Whitehead. It was Whitehead who almost broke the deadlock when his powerful header from a Corner was tipped over the bar by Kettle keeper Clements. From the resultant corner Hamilton headed just wide. In 32 minutes Kettle were not given offside and Chalmers done well to block the shot from the in rushing forward. O’Hanlon had a  chance for the Shipyard after good work from Johnston but, he shot wide.In the 40th minute Eastaugh of Kettle had a shot from a narrow angle saved by Chalmers. A minute later from almost an identical position Moffat did find the net with a fine strike to put Kettle ahead. Just on half-time McCue crossed to Johnston who headed wide.

It was 10 minutes into the second half before another chance came along and Johnston really should have equalised. He done well to shield the ball from a throw in, then turn but he shot over from the corner of the 6 yard box. In 64 minutes Johnston had another effort when he headed over from a corner. 4 minutes later in what was their first attack of the second half, Kettle made it 2-0 with another fine finish, this time from Hampton who hit a loose ball over Chalmers from the edge of the box. In 78 minutes Kettle then hit a free-kick over the bar from distance. Shipyard substitute Beveridge then remarkably had three chances in as many minutes to give the Shipyard some hope. Firstly in 89 minutes he miss hit a left foot shot that trickled into the keepers hands, then he could not get a good connection as he stretched at the back post to meet a low cross and the ball went wide. In injury time the ball broke to him 12 yards out, this time his powerful shot just went wide of the post. Although the Shipyard were unlucky to lose, Kettle took their chances when they came along.
