Burntisland Shipyard 1 Glasgow University 6

Students too clever for Shipyard.

It was a case of Deja vu for the Shipyard on Saturday as once again they took an early lead but conceded an equaliser almost immediately before going on to lose 6-1 to Glasgow University in the South Region Challenge Cup. Sean Doyle finally received international clearance and made his debut from the bench in the second half.

The Shippy took the lead in the 3rd minute with a fine goal from Danny Butt. The big striker received a great pass from Tommy Hall a produced a sublime finish as he lobbed the ball over the advancing Uni keeper Ben Fulton and into the back of the net. However, the lead was short lived as a Uni player broke clear, rounded Shippy keeper Marcus Taylor and blasted the ball into the roof of the net. It took a superb save from Fulton to deny the Shipyard a second as he brilliantly pushed a deflected Danny Roberts drive onto the bar and over at the expense of a corner. Glasgow took the lead in the 14th minute after a low cross from the left was turned in from close range. A third goal for the Uni arrived in the 28th minute when David Walls beat Taylor at his near post with a powerful drive. The Shippy were denied a foothold in the game on the stroke of half-time when Nathan McKay saw his attempt cleared off the line.

Doyle came on for the injured Roberts early in the second half and looked busy as he tried to impress on his debut. The game was as good as over in the 66th minute as Donald Thomson netted with a low finish after he powered into the Shipyard box. Andrew Hume scored the University’s fifth as the Shipyard players tired although McKay and Ewan Fotheringham went close to getting a consolation for their team in the closing minutes; however, it was the students who had the final say as they scored their sixth goal in the final minute to easily progress to the next round.

The Shipyard are at home again this Saturday as the league campaign finally kicks off with Peebles Rovers the visitors. Kick off 2.30pm
