2012/2013 Season

Easthouses Lily. 9 Burntisland Shipyard. 2

Shipyard suffer embarrassing defeat

The Shipyard’s season hit rock bottom as they suffered a humiliating 9-2 defeat at the hands of bottom of the league Easthouses Lily. Paul Ferrier, Owen McCue and the injured James Whyte were missing from the previous week’s starting eleven. They were replaced by Steven McAndrew, Shaun Lamont and Ryan Rutherford.

The Shipyard started brightly and Rutherford was unlucky to be adjudged offside in the first minute. McAndrew made good ground down the right hand side and seemed to be caught in two minds as his ball into the box was too close to the keeper, though he almost caught him out as Young had to back pedal to gather the ball. Lily took the lead when Graeme Young latched onto a through ball and fired it into the corner of the net. It was 2-0 soon after when Martyn Melia failed to deal with a low shot to his right hand side. Easthouses continued to dominate and Melia saved well from John Hunter and G. Young shot wide. Mike Brown was penalised for pulling back a player in the Shipyard area and Stuart Love scored from the spot. Confusion between Brown and Melia led to G. Young scoring Easthouses fourth goal and as the clock passed the thirty minute mark Easthouses scored again to make it 5-0. The half ended on a sour note as Mark Brough had to be carried off after receiving a nasty gash to his leg. (After attending hospital Mark had two stitches inserted into his leg and is expected to be out for three to four weeks).

Easthouses kept up the pressure on the shipyard defence and it was no surprise when G. Young scored again in the 50th minute. The Shipyard then had a spell of pressure and twice Brendan Napier burst forward, beat a couple of opponents but could not find the target. The hosts again showed the Shipyard how it was done as a cross to the back post was easily headed home by Jason Young to make it 7-0. The Shipyard grabbed a consolation goal and what a goal it was as Rutherford unleashed an angled shot into the top corner leaving the Lily keeper helpless. Lily then kicked off and scored again and it was that man Graeme young who scored again, knocking the ball in at the back post. Rutherford again pulled a goal back  for the Shipyard when he scored at the second attempt after his initial shot had been blocked. Lily sub Craig Downie saw his effort come back off the post and Rutherford almost completed his hat-trick as his free kick was just off target. It was probably fitting that Graeme Young rounded off the scoring as he again capitalised on hesitancy in the Shipyard defence to score his fifth and Easthouses ninth.

Leith Athletic. 7 Burntisland Shipyard. 1

Leith too good for rusty Shipyard

This match was like a rusty old coaster against a slick well oiled cruise liner as the Shipyard had no answer the quality on show from Leith Athletic as the home side ran out easy 7-1 winners. Although manager Whitehead had nineteen players to choose from it was evident from the start that the fact the team had not played since 17th November was going to show, particularly as Leith had played three friendlies over the festive period. Lee Small, Gordon Grieve and Craig Hatton all returned to the starting eleven with Liall Robertson and Steven McAndrew taking a place on the bench. Continue Reading

Poor starts continue to haunt Shipyard

The Shipyard again made their chances of winning a match an almost impossible task, as like they did last week, when they allowed the opposition to take a three goal lead. Although they staged a decent fight back, it was not enough to take anything from the game. Paul Ferrier made a welcome return to the Shipyard side and new signing, former Herriot Watt player, Brendan Napier made his debut in place of the unavailable Liall Robertson. Continue Reading

Controversial decisions cost the Shipyard

The Shipyard were involved in a hugely controversial match at Coldstream as both teams felt several major decisions went against them. The club cannot comment on the match official’s performance. The Shipyard team showed one change from the team defeated at East Fife with Blair Grubb replacing the unavailable Craig Hatton. Mark Hamilton took a place on the bench after recovering from illness. Due to a mix up at the S.F.A. Paul Ferrier was still suspended. Continue Reading

Methil men prove too strong for Shipyard

With the club still smarting from their heavy defeat to Elgin City in the Scottish Cup and a new manager to impress, it was the East Fife first team squad that the Shipyard had to face at Bayview in the Fife Cup semi final. Ex-Shipyard player Craig Johnston was in the starting eleven but Gareth Wardlaw was sidelined due to injury. For the Shipyard Craig Hatton replaced the suspended Paul Ferrier and Steven Dow came in for the unavailable Owen McCue. Continue Reading

Champions too strong as Shipyard lose heavily

Stirling University proved far too strong for the Shipyard as they ran out comfortable 5-0 winners in this East of Scotland qualifying Cup tie at Recreation Park. It was always going to be an extremely difficult task for the Shipyard as Stirling are the current East of Scotland League champions with their array of talent from all over Britain. The Shipyard team showed one change from last week’s win at Peebles with Liall Robertson replacing the unavailable Craig Hatton. Continue Reading

Gala edge thriller

Both teams served up a cracking match at Recreation Park and despite a hat-trick from Ryan Rutherford the Shipyard were edged out by four goals to three. The match had everything with some fine goals and a freak one too as both teams attacked each other all game. Paul Ferrier made his first start since returning to the club and Owen McCue was also back in the fold as his golfing season draws to a close. Continue Reading
