Own goal hits the Shipyard hard.
The Shipyard narrowly lost out to their Lowland League opponents in the 2nd round of the Image Printers East of Scotland Cup. Bad luck again hurt the Shipyard, as what turned out to be the winning goal was a clearance that hit a defender’s face and spun into the net. Both teams played some decent football in the difficult conditions in what was an entertaining match. Manager Myles Allan had an almost full squad to choose from and made changes from last week with Kevin Masson returning from suspension and new signing JP McPhail was given his first start. Last kick is a sickening blow.
After last week’s poor showing the Shipyard turned in a much better performance against Eyemouth, especially defensively, and were denied a deserved victory by a freak goal in the 94th minute. The last kick of the ball actually. Myles and his players would have gained a bit of confidence after their midweek friendly win over Rosyth Juniors, though he still had a few absentees from his squad as Pete Bell and Kevin Masson were still suspended and Stuart Blake, Gavin Bridges and Grant Blyth were unavailable. The squad was boosted by the loan signing of local lad John Paul McPhail from Cowdenbeath. Eyemouth are now being managed by the ex Hearts and Celtic star Mike Galloway. Continue Reading

Shipyard defence posted missing.
In the words of manager Myles Allan the performance was embarrassing and unacceptable and I don’t think anyone with connections to the Shipyard would argue with that. True there was a bit of misfortune and a couple of decisions from the referee that might have been different but over the piece Easthouses won far too easily and were as comfortable as the scoreline suggests. Week after week the same thing is written in these match reports and that is that goals are being conceded by poor defending and at an alarming rate. No doubt the unavailability of players through suspension, prolonged injury and generally doing other things does not help but you cannot make excuses for this type of result. Continue Reading

Heroic win for nine man Shipyard as Masson hat-trick steals the show.
Ormiston must have wished the referee had kept his cards in his pocket as the more he showed to the Shipyard players the more sense of injustice those Shipyard players felt and it galvanised them into producing a superb win in this South of Scotland Challenge Cup tie. Once again the Shipyard finished with nine men against Ormiston (what is it about that place) but this time it was the visitors that were victorious as a superb Grant Blyth free-kick deep into extra-time took the match to penalties. It was then the turn of Jordan Mushet to produce the heroics as he brilliantly saved Ormi’s fourth and fifth kicks to win the tie and was then mobbed by his jubilant teammates. Dale Robertson, Blair Smart and Renato Sartarello were all unavailable and Myles’ cause wasn’t helped when Brendan Napier pulled out during the warm up with the recurrence of a foot injury. Errors still proving costly.
It’s starting to sound like a broken record but yet again goals were gifted to the opposition as indecision and hesitancy was punished by the students in a match that the Shipyard matched their opponents and indeed dominated for the most of the second half. However, racking up a dozen or so corners in the second half counts for nothing if you can’t turn that territorial advantage into goals. Myles chose to give some of his fringe players a chance in this League Cup group match that in all honesty was a dead rubber for the Shipyard given their position in the group. This meant that the returning Brendan Napier, Alan Clark and Kevin Masson had to settle for places on the bench. Continue Reading

Rip roaring stuff at Recreation Park.
This was the proverbial game of two halves as the Shipyard fought back from three nil down at half-time to draw three each and with a little bit of luck might have actually gone on to win the match. Having looked down and out, two goals within a minute early in the second half set the match up for a rousing finale and although the Shipyard were level with still twenty minutes to go, they could not find the winner they probably merited. Stephen Connor, Kevin Masson, Alan Clark and Brendan Napier were all unavailable but Dale Robertson and Stuart Blake returned to the starting eleven. Continue Reading

Rover and out for Shipyard.
Although three nil probably flattered Peebles, there was no doubt that they deserved their win as the Shipyard turned in a below par performance. Two goals in injury time put a gloss on the Peebles performance but they could have had the game wrapped up earlier as they created the better chances over the ninety minutes. Although the Shipyard were missing several key players it was no excuse for such a miserable display. Brendan Napier joined the injury list alongside Stephen Connor, Alan Clark and Dale Robertson. Stuart Blake and Ryan Connor were unavailable. Continue Reading

Duns undone by Bell strike.
The Shipyard secured their first league victory of the season with a narrow but deserved win over Duns at Recreation Park. Given that six players were missing through injury and suspension that made it all the more pleasing to the Shipyard management team. Kevin Masson and Stuart Blake served the suspensions they picked up at Ormiston while long term absentee Ewan Fotheringham was joined on the injury list by Stevie Connor, Alan Clark and Dale Robertson who all picked up injuries on Scottish Cup duty last week. Captain Craig Lowe returned and he was joined in the starting eleven by Andy MacDonald, lee Henderson, Blair Smart, Adam Doig and Renato Sartarello. Continue Reading
