Ormiston 2 Burntisland Shipyard 1

Late Ormiston goal beats Shipyard again.

The Shipyard travelled to Ormiston with a somewhat depleted squad as Kevin Masson and Blair Smart were suspended. What must have disappointed the management was the fact that Brendan Napier, Ethan Anderson, Andy MacDonald and Joe Samson were all unavailable. Jamie Bouhaddou signed on loan from Cowdenbeath made his debut for the club with Ewan Henderson, Billy Rogerson and John Paul McPhail returning to the starting line-up. In the absence of manager Alex Lowe, Neil McLeod took charge, assisted by Tommy Roxburgh.

Traffic chaos on the M8 meant the Shipyard warm –up was severely curtailed and keeper Jordan Mushet arrived only 15 minutes before kick-off. Despite this unfortunate situation, it was the Shipyard that started the livelier of the two sides. Adam Doig showed good skills to create an opening after only three minutes but his shot went wide. The Shipyard continued to press and on the 15 minute mark, Henderson made a run from the centre of the park and, after some good passing interchanges with Dale Robertson, found himself clear in the Ormiston box and placed the ball beyond Combe to give the Shipyard a deserved lead. Ormiston lifted their performance but, although Ross was able to get a few shots away, none were on target and Shipyard retained their 1 – 0 lead at half-time.

Ormiston started the second half with more determination and Ross and Cunningham both had chances to find an equaliser. In the 50th minute, Ormiston were awarded a penalty when Alan Clark was yellow-carded for a foul on Ross. Cunningham took the kick and amazed everyone when he chipped a weak effort straight into the hands of Mushet. The Shipyard were still not getting to grips with the game and, although they managed a few flourishes on goal, as the wind strengthened behind Ormiston, so did the pressure on the Shipyard. Substitutions were made by both sides in an attempt to change things. The Ormiston pressure paid off after a series of corners when a Ross run was not picked up and he headed home, with under 10 minutes remaining. In the final minute of normal time, Quinn found himself in the clear and his finish gave Mushet no chance and ensured the points went Ormiston’s way.

Neil McLeod made no excuses for the result making the point that his team got exactly what they deserved after a very disappointing second half.

Burntisland Shipyard 4 Eyemouth United 1

Shipyard to the four once more.

The Shipyard scored four goals for the second week in a row at Recreation Park as Eyemouth United were beaten 4-1, though this time it was four different scorers rather than the one man getting them all. Kevin Masson did net again though to keep his hot streak going. The Shipyard team showed one change from last week with Ethan Anderson replacing John Paul McPhail. Continue Reading

Burntisland Shipyard 4 Kelso United 2

Masson master-class.

Kev Masson rolled back the years as he turned in a stunning performance when he scored all four Shipyard goals in their 4-2 victory over Kelso United at Recreation Park. Incredibly the veteran striker could have scored five goals but he missed the easiest chance of them all when he somehow put the ball over the gaping goals from all of four yards. He did have a bit luck with his first goal, when the referee ordered a retake of his missed penalty due to encroachment but he kept his composure to score at the second attempt. With four players unavailable due to a variety of reasons Alex’s squad was stretched to the limit but the thirteen players on duty served him well as they earned a deserved victory. Continue Reading

Burntisland Shipyard 2 Peebles Rovers 2

Shipyard hold league leaders Peebles.

This entertaining match was marred by a spitting incident late in the game that saw two players red carded though the player who spat escaped punishment from the referee. Whether Peebles will discipline the player is a matter for them. Blair Smart and Dale Robertson returned to the starting eleven having been missing last week to replace the unavailable Brendan Napier and Billy Rogerson. Alex and Neil made a tactical change by putting Craig Lowe at right back and playing Smart in a holding midfield role.

Peebles started the better team but it was the Shipyard who took the lead in their first attack after ten minutes. Smart sent Adam Doig clear on the right wing and his low cross was controlled by Kevin Masson before he smashed it beyond Darren Walker in the Peebles goal. The Shipyard doubled their lead much against the run of play when they broke forward and good play between Robertson and Ethan Anderson set up Smart. Smart’s shot from the edge of the area took a slight deflection which took it past Walker and into the net. This double setback stirred Peebles into life and they took control of the game and pressed a nervy home defence who were struggling to clear their lines. Though they forced a series of corners the visitors still had not found a way to goal but that changed in the 25th minute. The Shipyard lost possession around 35 yards from goal and the ball was quickly played out to the left edge of the box where Jordan Hall hit the ball first time with the outside of his boot and he found the top corner at Jordan Mushet’s left hand post. Peebles drew level in the 38th minute when keeper Walker took a quick free-kick that caught out the Shipyard defence and although Scott Sutherland looked five yards offside the Shipyard defence were slow to react and Sutherland despatched the ball beyond Mushet beating him at his near post. Peebles pressed for the remainder of the half but the Shipyard defence held out.

The second half was a much more even game with the Shipyard defence much more composed and assured. Both Robertson and Doig broke down the right hand side but better deliveries were required if a chance was to be created. Peebles were playing a high line in the second half but Masson and Doig could not beat the offside trap, however, Masson did beat it in the 75th minute and was clean through on the keeper but he was thwarted by Walker who made a good save from his well struck low shot. Walker again denied Masson, this time saving his 30 yard free-kick attempt. Right on full time the Shipyard’s Ewan Henderson and Peebles’ Hall were red carded in the aftermath of the spitting incident. In fairness to Peebles, their manager apologised to big Hendo for the incident but the damage was done.

After the match when asked about his team’s performance Alex said “We were again very pleased with the work rate, effort and commitment the players showed, which lead to a well-deserved point. If we had defended as well in the first half as we did in the second then we may have taken all three points. I felt the second half performance was good, we created a few chances and played some decent football in spells. If we continue to work hard in training and apply ourselves correctly on the park then we will start to win games and gain some much needed confidence”.

Ormiston 2 Burntisland Shipyard 1

Late goal sickener for Shipyard.

Alex Lowe’s career as Shipyard manager got off to a losing start but it took a goal in the 98th minute, yes the 98th minute to defeat his team. Make no mistake, Ormiston thoroughly deserved their victory but the manner in which their winning goal came left a sour taste in the Shipyard mouths. No-one at the match could quite believe how much time was added on with some wags in the crowd questioning if the ref’s watch had stopped or if he was playing until Ormiston scored. Alex’s first team selection gave him a headache right away with four members of his small squad unavailable through injury or other commitments, though he was boosted by the return of JP McPhail and Joe Samson. His assistant Neil McLeod took a place on the bench,

Ormiston started the match strongly and in the first three minutes the Shipyard defence had to be on their toes to clear dangerous situations. Slowly the visitors started to get a foothold in the match and Ewan Henderson was unlucky to be caught offside after good work from Billy Rogerson. Lee Cockerell was unfortunate to see his header hit the top of the bar as the hosts looked for the opening goal, then Shipyard keeper Jordan Mushet saved low at his near post. A Brendan Napier free-kick from wide on the left had to be parried away by Ormiston keeper Andrew Jack when the Shipyard player tried to catch him out with a shot rather than a cross. Ormiston again hit the woodwork, this time through Declan Quinn who saw his strike hit the post. The game was swinging from end to end with both teams creating chances as the half drew to a close with Cockerell going close for Ormiston and Adam Doig doing likewise for the Shipyard.

Having been on the back foot for most of the first half the Shipyard stunned their hosts by taking the lead at the start of the second. Napier played the ball wide to Rogerson and his excellent cross was headed home by Craig Lowe. A great was to impress his father in his first game in charge! Two minutes later Doig forced Jack to save at his near post after shooting from a tight angle. Ormiston were now starting to exert a bit of pressure on the Shipyard defence and Mushet did well to block with his legs from Quinn. Mushet then pulled off a tremendous double save as Ormiston looked certain to score. The hosts equalised on the hour mark when substitute Samson, only on the park for seconds, was adjudged to have fouled Quinn in the box. After the match Samson was adamant that Quinn slipped and he never touched him but the penalty was given and George Cunningham made no mistake from the spot. Ormiston continued to pile forward with Quinn being involved in most of the action as firstly he blasted over from close range then when the ball came back to him off the bar he did the same again as he could not get his effort on target. As the game moved in to added time the Shipyard had an amazing let off when with the goal at his mercy the Ormiston player somehow missed the target. The Shipyard players were infuriated a minute later when Quinn rose and blatantly tried to put the ball in the net with his hands. Having been cautioned in the first half, he should have received another yellow but the ref chose only to award the free-kick. This decision came back to hunt the Shipyard as it was Quinn who bundled the ball over the line from close range when it broke to him in the 98th minute to win the match for his side.

After the match Alex had mixed emotions when he said “Both Neil and I were very pleased with the player’s attitude, commitment and work rate during the game. Although Ormiston deserved their win as they had a number of clear cut chances which they did not convert, the final manner of the victory was tainted due to the referee adding 8 minutes injury time at the end of the game when neither physio had to go on the park to treat injuries the whole second half. Every time we had a free kick the Ormiston side-line were claiming timewasting even when their own players were carrying the ball away after giving away yet another free kick”.

Speaking about his new job Alex said “Neil and I have had a difficult first week and we were severely depleted squad wise today with only 13 available players, with 3 of these carrying knocks. Some of the players on the park played in unfamiliar positions and every single one of them battled hard and kept competing until the end of the game. Ewan Henderson put himself about in the middle of midfield and competed very well and young Todd had a number of last ditch clearances which kept us in the game. Jordan also had a number of good saves. The team is obviously low in confidence and our ball retention, passing and movement needs improved. We also struggle with the physicality of many of the teams in this league. These are things we will work to improve in training.

The goal we scored was very well worked with a good piece of skill from Billy Rogerson and a good cross for Craig to score with a fine header. Ormiston equalised with a penalty where Joe Samson slipped and claimed he did not touch the Ormiston player. We thought that we might hold on for a fortunate point until Ormiston’s winner deep into injury time”.

Looking ahead to next week Alex went on to say “We have Peebles next week and they sit at the top of the league and gave us a 6-1 thumping last time we played them. Hopefully we will have a stronger squad to pick from on Saturday and we certainly must improve on this result”.

The Spartans 9 Burntisland Shipyard 0

Shipyard Embarrassed and humiliated.

The Shipyard were quite simply blow away by Lowland League Spartans at Ainslie Park in what should have been a humiliating day for all concerned with the Club. Yes, Spartans are a top side but the way the team capitulated, particularly in the second half, was embarrassing.

Two goals from Errol Douglas and one from Kevin Motion had the hosts 3-0 up at half time. In the second half Douglas helped himself to another two goals and also on the score sheet were Gary Cennerazzo, Keith McLeod, with substitutes Michael Bruce and Craig Stevenson making it nine. Jordan Mushet in the Shipyard goal did well to keep it below double figures as he made a few decent saves.

Caretaker manager James Lock did not mince his words after the match when he said “It was clear to see today that some players had given up and that’s the most disappointing thing. Against a good side it was an opportunity for players to prove a point and prove they have the winning mentality to compete against players in higher leagues. That’s obviously not the case and is something that will need to be addressed by the manager when the decision is made this week. We have a few injuries at the moment and with Craig picking up a knock during the game, we’ll have to make sure the squad are in as best condition as possible ahead of the game this weekend”.

The Spartans: M. Jackson; A. Brown; G. Cennerazzo; K. Sivewright (M. Bruce); J. Nixon; I. Thomson; J. Beesley; K. Motion (C. Stevenson); E. Douglas; K. McLeod; W. Bremner (J. Beacher). Unused Subs: A. MacKinnon & R. Gilpin.

Burntisland Shipyard: J. Mushet; P. Bell (A. Macdonald)l; T. Arthur; B. Smart; A. Clark; K. Masson; D. Robertson (G. Bridges); E. Henderson; C. Lowe (B. Napier); A. Doig; B. Rogerson.

Burntisland Shipyard 0 Heriot Watt University 5

University get it all too easy.

It would be fair to say that the Shipyard did not deserve to lose 5-0 but if you do not take your chances and defend poorly then that is what can happen. Too many times when the Shipyard got into good positions the wrong option was taken and defensively you only had to look at the desire the University defence showed in the last minute to keep a clean sheet as they threw their bodies in front of the ball to make a block. Andy Macdonald returned to the squad after his recent back injury, as did Ethan Anderson who was out with a foot problem and Kevin Masson returned after being unavailable last week. JP McPhail was still injured and Pete Bell was on holiday. Continue Reading

Burntisland Shipyard 2 Eyemouth United 0

Shipyard ease to victory.

Two goals on the stroke of half time saw the Shipyard ease to a comfortable win against Eyemouth at Recreation Park. In truth the win should have been much more emphatic but a combination of good goalkeeping and poor finishing meant that the visitors were not on the end of a heavy defeat. The Shippy injury list shows no sign of easing with JP McPhail now joining Andy Macdonald and Ethan Anderson on the sidelines and with Kevin Masson unavailable James Lock’s options were limited even more. Eyemouth had ex Shipyard striker Keith Buckley in their ranks. Continue Reading
