Late penalty denies ten man Shipyard.
A penalty eight minutes from time denied the Shipyard a shock win over high flying Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale in this last league fixture before the festive break, at a windy Recreation Park. The Shippy played the last 38 minutes with ten men after Conor Drury was shown an unbelievably harsh second yellow card for an alleged dive, however, the Shipyard still took the lead through Craig Lowe a few minutes later before being pegged back late on. Big Hendo dumps Coldstream in gripping encounter.
The Shipyard came from behind to record their first victory since 12th September as they beat Coldstream 2-1 at Home Park. The teams had endure difficult conditions with a very wet pitch and persistent rain falling from the leaden skies. However, the conditions did not trouble the players as both teams gave their all in search of much needed points. The Shipyard had to shuffle the pack prior to kick off with JP McPhail pulling out in the warm up and his place in the starting eleven went to Ewan Fotheringham. Continue Reading

Poor finishing hands the Shippy another defeat.
Although the final score indicates otherwise, this was a game the Shipyard could and should have had wrapped up by half time. Several gilt edge chances, including a penalty, were missed and the Shippy were punished for this poor finishing as the students scored three unanswered goals in the second half to take the points. Shippy run league leaders close.
The width of the crossbar denied the Shipyard a deserved share of the spoils in this re-arranged league match at Meadowbank 3G on Saturday. Sure, Leith had a lot of the ball but Joran Mushet in the Shippy goals did not have many saves to make as most of the opportunities that fell Leith’s way ended up off target. Once again due to injury but mainly suspension manager Alex Lowe’s squad was stretched to the limited, however, the guys that played can be proud of their efforts.
In the 6th minute Scott Wilson slashed his shot wide for the hosts while at the other end Brendan Napier saw his attempt drift wide. Leith took the lead in the 9th minute when John Ferguson was all alone at the back post to head in a fine cross from the right hand side. A poor pass back from Ben Couper almost gifted Leith a second but Mushet did well to block the effort with his body before the danger was cleared. The home team returned the compliment when poor control at the edge of the box offered an opportunity to Napier but he was closed down before he could get a shot away. Napier was in the thick of the action as he shot just wide after receiving a fine pass from Dale Robertson. In the 27th minute Pete Bell got forward down the left and his effort across the keeper drifted beyond the far post. James Hainey had a headed attempt at the back post for the home team before the Shipyard equalised in the 37th minute. John Paul McPhail headed a deep ball back across goal and Ewan Henderson was on hand to stab the ball home from close range.
Leith had all the pressure at the start of the second half but Hainey, Wilson and Ker Allan were all off target. Leith’s closest attempt in this period came in the 56th minute when Steven Glynn just failed to connect with a free-kick driven across the face of the Shipyard goal. Leith regained the lead and scored what proved to be the winner in the 77th minute when Wilson burst clear of the Shipyard defence and stroked the ball beyond Mushet. After this the Shipyard dominated proceeding but could not find that elusive goal as firstly, sub Ewan Fotheringham gathered a ball from Big Hendo and saw his deflected strike hit the bar with Leith keeper Neil Fairnie beaten. Next Henderson headed wide from the resultant corner as the Shippy kept up the pressure. The visitors were dealt a blow when Conor Drury received two yellow cards in quick succession for fouls and he could consider himself unfortunate given some of the challenges that had went unpunished earlier in the match. In fairness the loss of a player did not stop the Shippy attacking and Fotheringham would have been disappointed not to have headed home Robertson’s great cross. Deep in added time Robertson had the Shipyard’s final chance but he shot narrowly wide from the edge of the box.
Dale Robertson saw last gasp effort drift wide.
It was a case of mixed emotions for Alex as the losing streak continued but the player’s gave him as good a performance as they have in weeks when he said after the match “ That was a much improved performance today and it was against one of the best teams in the division. We competed very well against a slick, sharp passing Leith team and were very unlucky in the end not to have taken a point from the game as we created three good chances in the last ten minutes. Alex had praise for his players when he added “The boy’s effort, work rate and commitment was outstanding and I was very pleased with our performance”. Though he countered his praise when he went on to add “However, we still got nothing from the game and again lost two very avoidable goals and if we cut out basic errors will start to win a few games”.

Shippy spooked on Halloween.
The Shipyard produced a horror show on Halloween as they suffered a 4-0 defeat to Heriot Watt University but perhaps more disappointing was the three red cards received as the team lost its discipline in the second half. A combination of injury, suspension and no shows had the squad stretched but the welcome return of Dale Robertson bolstered the team for this league fixture at Riccarton. Continue Reading

More defensive woe for the Shipyard.
Slack defending again cost the Shipyard dear as Hawick gained a narrow win in a tousy match at Recreation Park. Both teams finished with ten men as JP McPhail was sent packing, somewhat harshly, for two yellow cards and Hawick’s Blake Wales got a straight red for a studs on the knee challenge on Shippy debutant Conor Drury. Alex Lowe was back in the Shipyard dug out having missed the last two matches due to being on holiday.
Hawick had a chance in the first minute but giant striker Alieu Faye headed over from a decent position. In the 4th minute the home team went close twice as Hawick keeper Kyle Rankin did well to push Darrell Anthony’s powerful strike away and Ewan Henderson just failed to nod the loose ball on target. The visitors took the lead in the 8th minute when Cameron MacFarlane broke clear of the Shipyard defence and drilled the ball low across Jordan Mushet and into the far corner. Three minutes later the Shippy defence struggled to clear a loose ball in the box and Mushet had to be alert to push the ball round the post at the expense of a corner. A Kevin Masson effort from a tight angle was cleared off the line with the keeper beaten and it was Masson who then drew the Shipyard level from the penalty spot to keep his fine scoring run going as he sent Rankin the wrong way from twelve yards. The Penalty came about when Mark James was fouled as he burst into the box and the referee had no option but point to the spot. Hawick then had a sustained period of pressure as Mushet saved from MacFarlane and Michael Lynch before coming to the edge of his box to tackle Faye as the Hawick forward looked to pick up a loose ball. The Hawick pressure paid off but it was a shocker for the Shipyard as a short pass back from Craig Lowe only found MacFarlane and he placed the ball beyond Mushet to put his team back in the lead. A James strike from distance was deflected away for a corner as the half drew to a close.
The Shippy were almost level in bizarre circumstances at the start of the second half when a Masson free-kick played into the box was allowed to bounce and Rankin was at full stretch to tip the ball over for a corner. From the corner James saw his effort go narrowly wide. The Shipyard had a let off in the 52nd minute when Ryan Stevenson’s angled drive bounced back off the post with Mushet beaten. The Shipyard had appeals for a second penalty when Anthony burst through two players and although there was contact the referee deemed not enough to award a spot kick. Rankin then had to be sharp off his line as Masson looked to capitalise on a fine through ball from James. Lowe then saw his header cleared off the line as the Shippy continued to push for the equaliser. The hopes of that Shipyard leveller diminished in the 73 minute when McPhail was shown a second yellow card for what the referee deemed to be a dive as the youngster drove forward, though the fact that the Hawick defender had a hold of McPhail’s shirt went unnoticed. With four minutes remaining Hawick were reduced to 10 men when Wales’ challenge on Drury drew an immediate red card from the official. The Shipyard spurned a great chance for a deserved draw deep in injury time when Andy MacDonald just missed the target with a free header from around ten yards.
Andy MacDonald heads narrowly over.
Alex was naturally disappointed about the manner of defeat when he said “We continue to lose soft goals and in the tight games we have been involved in recently these goals are killing us. We have got to tighten up at the back if we are to get out of this losing streak. I was also disappointed in the lack of discipline some of the boys showed today as unnecessary cards are giving me more problems to deal with”.

Shipyard lose thriller despite Masson hat-trick.
Selkirk hung on to beat the Shipyard in a nine goal thriller in the South Region Challenge Cup as the home team fought back from three goals down to almost take the match into extra-time. It was honours even between the two veteran strikers on show as both netted a hat-trick, however, Kevin Masson was not out shone his more illustrious opponent Gary O’Connor as he more than matched him in a cracking encounter at Recreation Park. Both teams were down to the bare bones with Selkirk only having one sub and the Shipyard two when the game eventually kicked off at 3pm. The Shipyard agreed to a late kick off as the Selkirk team struggled to get to Fife due to traffic congestion, though to be fair, it can just be as much of a problem for the players waiting around for an extra half hour as it is rushing to play a match without much of a warm up. Shippy edged out by students.
For the third week in a row the Shipyard lost by the odd goal, however, against Stirling University it more a case of bad luck than bad defending that caused the defeat and to be fair the students probably deserved their victory. With Alex Lowe on holiday Neil McLeod took the team and there was a surprise return to the squad from Brendan Napier who has been missing due to work commitments. Kevin Masson also returned having been unavailable due to personal issues.
The students dominated the first half and would consider themselves unfortunate not to be more than one goal ahead at the break, albeit there was good fortune about their goal as a wicked deflection took David McGaughie’s long range shot away from Jordan Mushet and into the corner of the net. The University’s Jack Halley was a thorn in the Shipyard’s side all afternoon and in the first half he did everything bar score as he was denied by the woodwork, Mushet twice and a shot just off target. Liam Allison also went close on a couple of occasions before McGauchie broke the deadlock in the 38th minute. The only real effort of note the Shippy had in the opening period was a Masson drive that Stirling keeper Tim Hughes parried away.
Kev Masson got the Shippy level at the start of the second half.
The second half was a much more balanced affair with the play more end to end and it was the Shippy who had the early pressure which resulted in an equaliser. In the first minute Masson latched onto a loose ball and bore down on goal but unfortunately he pulled his shot wide. However, Masson was not to be denied when he took a pass from Ewan Henderson, drove across the box and fired a right foot shot beyond Hughes. Stirling were upset about the goal as they claimed a throw in should have been awarded to them in the build-up and to be fair it seemed that way. Napier saw a shot deflected in similar fashion to the University goal but his effort looped just over with Hughes stranded. Graeme Haywood produced a good block close to his line to stop the students regaining the lead but the goal was only delayed by a couple of minutes. Once again the goal was controversial as there seemed to be a clear handball by one of the students in the build-up, however, play continued and David Collins was on hand at the back post to shoot past Mushet with an hour on the clock. The Shippy had a let off in the 63rd minute when a shot from a tight angle hit the post and bounced into Mushet’s hands. Henderson headed over for the Shipyard before Mushet held from danger man Halley at the other end. In the 76th minute it was the Shipyard’s turn to be denied by the woodwork as Masson rounded a defender and the keeper before crashing a shot from a tight angle off the bar. Unfortunately for the Shipyard Adam Doig could not steer the rebound on target from around 12 yards. With 8 minutes remaining Hughes pulled off a tremendous save to deny Darrell Anthony as the youngster fired in a shot from 10 yards through a ruck of players. The Shipyard continued to press looking for a leveller but were left dismayed as the ref blew for full-time.
