Match Reports from the 2016/17 season.

Burntisland Shipyard 1 Tweedmouth Rangers 5

Injuries hamper Shippy’s bid for elusive win.

Although the Shipyard suffered another heavy defeat it was one of those days when everything seemed to conspire against them as Tweedmouth came out on top in this basement battle. After an even opening 15 minutes the Shippy were dealt a major blow when after racing from his goal to clear the ball, Marcus Taylor landed awkwardly and could not continue after suffering knee and ankle damage. Outfield sub Kenny Ford replaced the injured keeper who was taken to hospital to have his injury assessed. At this stage it is unclear how long big Marcus will be out for. Just before half-time centre back Marc Black suffered a knee injury and despite treatment at the time and during the break Black had to be replaced within a minute of the restart.

Ford was tested for the first time in the 22nd minute and rose to the challenge as he saved well from Rangers striker Lee Dodd. The same man also went close a few minutes later with a headed effort. The Shippy took the lead in the 43rd minute when a great cross from Ewan Fotheringham was turned into his own net by Rudy McLeod. As has been the case when the Shipyard have taken the lead in matches they failed to hold on to it for long as Tweedmouth broke from deep and Jake Rutherford was on hand to knock the ball home from inside the box. Agonisingly for the shipyard the goal came in the time that was added on for Taylor’s injury.

Shippy have shout for handball.

Shippy have shout for handball.

Daryl Taylor shot wide for the Shippy as did Ross Moore for the visitors and the Shippy’s Sean Doyle headed into the side netting as both teams looked to gain the lead. The Shipyard had a strong claim for a penalty turned down when the Tweedmouth defender appeared to handle Daryl Taylor’s cross (see pic). It was the visitors who got the goal as the game moved into the final twenty minutes when Rutherford smashed an unstoppable shot in off the underside of the bar giving Ford no chance. The Shipyard could not find a way back into the match and seemed to run out of steam as Tweedmouth added another three goals in the final ten minutes. Substitute Luke Dickson bundled the ball home as the Shipyard looked for an offside decision and a minute later Stuart Coyle capitalised on a defensive mistake as he rounded Ford and rolled the ball home. The fifth goal came in the final minute as a speculative long range shot from Jordan Ainslie deceived Ford and found its way into the net.

This Saturday the Shippy make the short trip across the Forth to face Heriot Watt University at Riccarton with the match kicking off at 3pm.

Burntisland Shipyard 0 Ormiston 6

Same old story for sorry Shipyard.

The Shipyard’s season continued to lurch from one heavy defeat to another as visitors Ormiston hit six without reply at Recreation Park on Saturday. Although there was little between the teams in the early stages once Ormiston took the lead in the 24th minute they never looked back and ran out easy winners in the end. In fairness to the Shipyard players their cause wasn’t helped by some controversial and baffling decisions from the referee.

Graeme Purves opened the scoring for Ormiston with a header from a ball played in from the left-hand side and Craig O’Neill made it two in the 29th minute when he converted after the Shippy defence failed to clear a ball cut back from the bye-line. Ormiston’s third was hugely controversial when the referee awarded them a penalty for a trip despite a clear case of dangerous play in the build by an Ormiston player, however, Mr Smith claimed he never saw the infringement. Johnathon Edmond calmly stroked the ball home from 12 yards.

Edmond scored from the spot again in the 61st minute though this time the award was merited. Edmond then completed his hat-trick in the 66th minute when he easily scored from inside the area after side stepping his marker.

In a rare attack from the Shippy Ewan Fotheringham burst clear of the visitors defence only to be hauled down as drove towards the box, however, Mr Smith saw it differently and awarded Ormiston a free-kick much to the surprise of everyone inside the ground. Ormiston scored their sixth with a couple of minutes remaining when Nicky Cairns’ deflected free-kick found the net.

Due to a fixture reversal the Shippy are at home again this week (22/10/2016) as we welcome league newcomers Tweedmouth Rangers from Berwick upon Tweed to Burntisland. Kick off 2.30pm.

Burntisland Shipyard 0 Leith Athletic 6

Difficult season continues as Leith beat Shipyard.

After last week’s debacle at Eyemouth the Shippy faced up to last season’s champions Leith Athletic at Recreation Park and there was no let up for the beleaguered home team as the visitors ran out easy 6-0 winners. That being said, Leith will beat other teams by similar score lines such is the quality in their ranks, therefore, the Shipyard can take some crumbs of comfort from their performance and in particular the Taylor brothers, with Marcus turning in a fine performance in goal and Daryl who was unlucky to be denied by the woodwork on two occasions.

Leith took a grip of the game from the outset and grabbed the lead in the 4th minute when Chris Beaton stroked the ball home from around twelve yards. Marcus Taylor saved well from Jack Combe before Kerr Allan should have done better than shooting wide from a decent position. The Shippy were almost level in the 21st minute when Daryl Taylor’s angled drive came back off the post before the ball was cleared. Leith continued to dominate as James Hainey and Neil Lowson both went close as the Shippy defence worked tirelessly to keep the visitors out. The Shipyard rearguard was breeched again in the 36th minute with a fine strike from Lewis Tracey which found the corner of the net. Keeper Taylor denied Combe just before the interval and repeated that feat at the start of the second period.

Leith keeper Neil Fairnie was called into action and he dealt well with a Sean Cusick effort while at the other end Allan saw his drive crash back off the bar. Leith’s third goal arrived in the 54th minute when Hainey headed home a free-kick delivered from wide on the left. The visitors sub Rhys Craigie came on and made an immediate impact when he scored two goals in as many minutes with the second in particular being a fine strike from distance. Fellow sub Gavin Kneeshaw completed the scoring in the 81st minute though Taylor later admitted he was disappointed not to keep the shot out. Daryl Taylor was denied a consolation goal in the final minute when his ferocious free-kick came back off the bar with Fairnie well beaten.

The Shipyard are at home again on Saturday 15th October with Ormiston being the visitors. Kick off 2.30pm.

East Fife 7 Burntisland Shipyard 0

East Fife too strong for Shippy in Fife Cup.

The Shipyard bowed out of this season’s Fife Cup after going down 7-0 to a strong East Fife team at New Bayview last night. A Paul McManus hat-trick, a double from Kevin O’Hara and strikes from Scott Mercer and Jamie Insall saw the Methil team through to next round of the competition. Continue Reading

Burntisland Shipyard 1 Peebles Rovers 2

Peebles take points with late winner.

A goal deep into stoppage time denied the Shipyard the point they deserved in their opening league fixture of the season as Peebles headed home with all three points. Despite taking the lead for the third match in a row the Shippy were unable to maintain that advantage and slipped to an agonising defeat. Continue Reading

Burntisland Shipyard 1 Glasgow University 6

Students too clever for Shipyard.

It was a case of Deja vu for the Shipyard on Saturday as once again they took an early lead but conceded an equaliser almost immediately before going on to lose 6-1 to Glasgow University in the South Region Challenge Cup. Sean Doyle finally received international clearance and made his debut from the bench in the second half.

The Shippy took the lead in the 3rd minute with a fine goal from Danny Butt. The big striker received a great pass from Tommy Hall a produced a sublime finish as he lobbed the ball over the advancing Uni keeper Ben Fulton and into the back of the net. However, the lead was short lived as a Uni player broke clear, rounded Shippy keeper Marcus Taylor and blasted the ball into the roof of the net. It took a superb save from Fulton to deny the Shipyard a second as he brilliantly pushed a deflected Danny Roberts drive onto the bar and over at the expense of a corner. Glasgow took the lead in the 14th minute after a low cross from the left was turned in from close range. A third goal for the Uni arrived in the 28th minute when David Walls beat Taylor at his near post with a powerful drive. The Shippy were denied a foothold in the game on the stroke of half-time when Nathan McKay saw his attempt cleared off the line.

Doyle came on for the injured Roberts early in the second half and looked busy as he tried to impress on his debut. The game was as good as over in the 66th minute as Donald Thomson netted with a low finish after he powered into the Shipyard box. Andrew Hume scored the University’s fifth as the Shipyard players tired although McKay and Ewan Fotheringham went close to getting a consolation for their team in the closing minutes; however, it was the students who had the final say as they scored their sixth goal in the final minute to easily progress to the next round.

The Shipyard are at home again this Saturday as the league campaign finally kicks off with Peebles Rovers the visitors. Kick off 2.30pm

Ormiston 7 Burntisland Shipyard 3

Defensive woes continue for Shipyard.

With nine of the players that were on duty last week unavailable for one reason or another it was all change again for the Shippy as they travelled to Ormiston for what was a meaningless League Cup section match for both teams. In fairness the hosts were also down to the bare bones with several of their squad also missing.

In the early stages it was one way traffic as Ormiston laid siege to the Shippy goal with Yusif Bernawi and Craig O’Neil both going close. Luke Fleming then cleared an effort off the line after Shippy keeper Sean Murphy saved. The Shipyard took the lead with their first attempt at goal when Ewan Fotheringham deftly flicked in an Andy MacDonald free-kick. Unfortunately for the Shippy they could not settle on their lead as the hosts drew level four minutes later as David Nash burst clear of the Shipyard defence and slotted the ball beyond Murphy. Lyle Kellichan headed over a Mark Black cross but it was Ormiston who took the lead in the 28th minute when Jonathon Malcolm was allowed time at the edge of the box to line up his shot which he duly dispatched into the net. Bernawi missed a chance for his team before the Shippy drew level. Once again it was down to the quality of MacDonald’s delivery as Black got on the end of his flighted free-kick and bundled the ball home from close range. Black almost snatched a second goal for himself but headed wide before the Shippy were hit with a double whammy prior to the interval. A Bernawi strike found the far corner of the net in the 41st minute and two minutes later he scored again when he converted a cut back from the centre of the box. Fotheringham almost got the Shipyard a goal back in the closing seconds of the half but his hooked effort went wide.

The Shipyard had a massive let off in the 55th minute when due to some poor finishing and some heroic defending they managed to scramble the ball away for a corner. Once again Ormiston missed a great chance to increase their lead but somehow Nash missed the target when it looked easier to score. The game then disappeared out of sight for the Shippy in the space of two minute when firstly Ormiston dangerman Bernawi scored after another powerful run in the 61st minute and it was six a minute later, though how the goal stood as it appeared Ormiston were offside on two occasions was baffling with the Ormiston player putting the ball in the net from the goal line. The Shippy pulled one back in the 67th minute when Fotheringham converted a Black cross, then home keeper Daryl Johnston held a MacDonald free-kick. The Shipyard then had Luke Fleming sent off for a second yellow card, though it looked harsh in what was a fifty fifty challenge. O’Neill completed the scoring with eight minutes remaining with a strike from the edge of the box, though it was not the end of the drama as Ormiston had two players sent off in the closing minutes as firstly Nicky Cairns received a second yellow, though it was not apparent if it was for his retaliatory kick at the Shipyard players head. Kenny Ford was also cautioned for his part in the incident. Ormiston sub Richard Weir was they shown a straight red card for a shocking lunge on young Lyle Kellichan.

Next up on Saturday 17th September the Shipyard are at home to Glasgow University in the South Region Challenge Cup 1st Round. Kick off 2.30pm.

Ormiston: D. Johnston; J. Malcolm; G. Millard; Z. Walker (J. Morgan); A. Morgan (R. Weir); N. Cairns; T. Carr (C. McArthur); C. O’Neill; Y. Bernawi; A. Simpson; D. Nash.

Burntisland Shipyard: S. Murphy; C. Watt; L. Kellichan; K. Ford; D. Roberts; A. MacDonald; E. Fotheringham; L. Fleming; M. Black; C. Maxwell; N. McKay.

Burntisland Shipyard 0 Peebles Rovers 1

Peebles dash Shippy hopes.

The Shipyard’s difficult start to the season continued on Saturday as they lost by the only goal of the game to Peebles Rovers. The visitors missed a few decent chances throughout the match and were almost made to pay late on as only the referee blowing for offside denied the Shippy an equaliser. Again there were a few different faces in the Shippy line up as the rules of the competition allow trialists to be played and the management team to the opportunity to look at them. Continue Reading
