Late goal blow for Shipyard.

The Shipyard’s first season in the East of Scotland League ended on Saturday with a 1-1 draw against Duns at a rain lashed Recreation Park. Myles had the luxury of a full squad, apart from Stuart Innes, to choose from and that meant a return for Stevie Connor and a rare start for Robbie Cunningham.

The Shipyard had the elements behind them in the first half and it only took two minutes for them to test Scott Lumsden in the Duns goal when Dale Robertson fired in a shot from distance that Lummy was happy to parry away for a corner. A Kevin Masson free kick in the 10th minute was not far away as the home team dominated with Duns battling against the conditions. Duns did have a good opportunity soon after but it would have been hugely controversial had they scored, as the ball had clearly gone out for a throw-in in the build up. Brendan Napier had a similar effort to that of Robertson’s earlier, which Lumsden dealt with in the same fashion. Pete Bell also shot from distance but his strike did not trouble the keeper though it was not too far off target. In the 39th minute Connor latched onto a long ball that took a deflection and he managed to get his head on the ball but he could only direct it into the keeper’s hands. Robertson tested Lumsden again with a powerful strike and again Lummy took no chances as he pushed the ball away to safety. That was to be Robertson’s last involvement as he did not re-appear after the interval due to an injury he picked up.

Cunningham had the first chance of the second half but again Lumsden was up to the task before a well worked free kick saw a Blair Grubb cross scrambled away as the Shipyard players looked set to capitalise. Duns came into the match and had a bit of pressure that saw an in swinging corner flash across the face of the Shipyard goal. From another corner Ben Bouchier went close for the visitors and a minute later Mikey Couser dived acrobatically to his right to hold a shot from distance. Couser was in action again as he dealt with a Steven Burns header. It looked like the Shipyard were going to break the deadlock in the 75th minute when Cunningham burst through the visitors defence. It looked like he was impeded as he bore down on goal and as Lumsden dived at his feet it seemed he was fouled, however, the referee was wasn’t interested and waved play on. Duns almost had a stroke of good fortune when a mishit shot fell at the feet of Chris Falconer but he could not direct his snap shot on target. It was the hosts turn next to almost capitalise on a lucky break when an Alex Peoples shot took a deflection leaving Lumsden helpless but the ball rolled the wrong side of the post. With two minutes of normal time remaining the Shipyard were awarded a somewhat soft penalty when Napier went down just inside the box after minimal contact. He took the kick himself and coolly placed the ball low to the left with Lumsden diving to his right. The Shipyard thought the game was won but they were stunned in added time when Burns received a pass inside the Shipyard box and dispatched a well placed shot out of the reach of the diving Couser to earn his team a share of the spoils.

Myles was reasonably upbeat after the match despite losing a late goal said “Today we just asked the players to go out and enjoy it as much as possible. Considering the weather I thought that the guys applied themselves brilliantly and played some good football at times”. Then with a rueful smile he went on to add “It’s typical of our season though that we can take the lead so late in the game yet still be unable to keep hold of the three points. That is something that we’ll need to improve next season”.

Teams: Burntisland Shipyard: Couser; Grubb; Nedialkov; Bridges; McKay; Bell; Robertson (Tabengwa); Cunningham (Peoples); Masson (Crombie); Napier; Connor. Unused Subs: Grieve & Henderson.

Penalty save earns Shipyard draw.

The Shipyard and Hawick fought out a 1-1 draw in what was a poor match played in blustery conditions at Albert Park. The Shipyard were ahead before Hawick drew level shortly before half-time and late in the match the visitors had Mikey Couser to thank for their point when he brilliantly saved a penalty. Stevie Connor and Stuart Innes were unavailable, their places were taken by Martin Nedialkov and Alex Peoples. Lee Henderson dropped to the bench and the returning Pete Bell took his place in the midfield.

Hawick had the strong wind behind them in the first half but it was the visitors who had the first opportunity when keeper Steven West picked up a pass back around ten yards out. As is not uncommon the Shipyard’s effort was charged down by the defensive wall. Hawick had a chance in the 11th minute when Nedialkov failed to control the ball but Innes Zenati shot over from a good position. An Alex Peoples pass found Kevin Masson in space but he drifted wide and had to shoot from a tight angle and was well off target. Masson then headed wide from a Dale Robertson cross as the Shipyard took a grip of the game. The deadlock was broken in the 18th minute when a Brendan Napier pass split the home defence and Gavin Bridges showed great composure in gathering the ball, rounding the keeper and rolling the ball into the net. Zenati had a chance for the hosts but his header from a corner was wide of the mark. Masson had another chance for the Shipyard after being set up by Peoples but West was off his line smartly to block the danger. David Heaver shot just over with a wind assisted long range effort and in the 37th minute Couser held a Declan Hogg free-kick in what was Hawick’s first shot on target. The home team did muster an equaliser in what was a poor goal for the Shipyard to lose. A corner from the right was allowed to drop inside the six yard box and Peter Keenan was able to control the ball, turn and shoot into the roof of the net. Couser held a Heaver shot just before half-time as Hawick looked to take in a lead, having had the wind advantage at their backs.

Masson and Napier combined well and forced a corner for the Shipyard and from the set piece Nedialkov was unlucky to see his header drift over. Masson volleyed over from eight yards out after another Shipyard corner fell to him. Play was now very scrappy with neither team troubling the respective keepers as shown when Masson shot high over from the edge of the area. Hawick appealed for a penalty when the ball hit Bell but the referee was not interested and when a cross was delivered Keenan’s header ended up by the corner flag. Shipyard substitute Henderson tried his luck from distance but was too high with his well hit shot and then Napier did well to find space in the box but could not deliver a telling cross. Hawick were then presented with a wonderful chance to win the match when Hogg was allowed to drive into the box and was tripped by Craig McKay, however, Couser pulled off an excellent save to deny Keenan. As the match moved into added time Shipyard subs Anesu Tabengwa and Henderson combined well but West saved well with his legs to stop Henderson netting a late winner like he had done in the match at Burntisland. A mention must also be given to referee Gavin Thomson who, certainly in the Shipyard camp, everyone though he had an excellent match.

When asked about his team’s performance after the game Myles reflected “Today was a strange game as I thought we played well until a few minutes before the Hawick goal and on the balance of play we could have been two or three up before they equalised. However, after that we didn’t really have any cohesion though we still created some good chances in the second half that should have been taken. Then at the death we let their midfielder run twenty yards without a challenge and commit a silly foul in the box”. Myles was naturally very pleased with the outcome of the penalty and said “ Mikey’s save was outstanding and on the balance of play and chances it would have been criminal for us to lose. There is a disappointment that we didn’t capitalise more in the first half but it’s an improvement on Wednesday’s performance at least”.

Teams: Hawick Royal Albert: West; Fettes; Russell (King); Loughlin; Johnston (Burrell); Fleming (Strathdee); Zenati; Heaver; Keenan; Hogg; Swailes. Unused Sub: Cooper

Burntisland Shipyard: Couser; Grubb (Henderson); Nedialkov; Bridges; McKay; Bell; Robertson; Crombie; Masson (Cunningham); Napier; Peoples (Tabengwa). Unused Sub: McCrindle.

Referee: G. Thomson.

Manager left frustrated by poor performance.

The Shipyard turned in a very poor performance as Craigroyston cruised to a comfortable 5-1 victory and took another step towards the title despite going behind in the first couple of minutes. After running Craigy close last week, hopes were high of a possible upset but that was never to materialise as Craigroyston dominated for long spells and fully merited their win. Pete Bell was unavailable due to work commitments and was replaced by the returning Brendan Napier in the only change from Saturday’s trip to Selkirk.

After an early scare when Mikey Couser watched a looping cross hit the top of the crossbar the hosts stunned Craigroyston by taking the lead in the 2nd minute and it was a disaster for keeper Stuart Burnside. He made a total hash of dealing with a pass back and it left Dale Robertson with the simple task of rolling the ball into the net. Errol Douglas broke clear of the Shipyard defence but Couser was up to the task and pushed the ball away at the expense of a corner. From the corner Douglas again went close when his shot from six yards cleared the bar. Craigy drew level in the 12th minute when Bryan Wilson took a pass just inside the box and drove an angle shot into the bottom corner. Couser held a twice taken free-kick from Steven Moncur before the visitors scored twice in as many minutes. Douglas ran onto a through ball in the 28th minute and produced a composed finish to beat Couser from twelve yards and then Moncur was on hand at the back post to head in from close range from a free-kick delivered from the left-hand side. Mark Hendrie shot narrowly wide for the visitors as did Kevin Masson for the home team.

Robertson shot over from the edge of the box when a corner was cleared to him as the Shipyard had the first opportunity of the second half. However, Craigroyston were soon back on the attack and Liam Young volleyed over at the back post. Another goal did arrive two minutes later and it was that man Hendrie, who broke the Shipyard hearts last week, who netted when he shot home from inside the area. The Shipyard then had a brief period of pressure when Burnside again looked dodgy as he tipped away a long range effort from Stevie Connor. When the resultant corner came in Craigy were happy to scramble the ball off the line and clear the danger. Gavin Bridges should have pulled a goal back for the hosts when he headed wide from close in when he got on the end of a Connor corner. Craigroyston completed the scoring in the 81st minute when Substitute Scott Ritchie scored with almost his first touch when his low drive from 25 yards went in off the post despite a despairing dive from Couser.

After keeping his players in the dressing room for a good half an hour after the match an angry Myles Allan emerged to say “Tonight was as easy a three points as I’m sure Craigroyston have had all season. It was clear who were hungrier and we just didn’t compete at any point in the game. We were second to everything and seemed happy just to be there to make up the numbers”. He went on to add “Every player who played tonight is capable of so much more and that’s what is frustrating. I could accept it if they gave 100% but just fell short, like the last game against them. But tonight was embarrassing and I get the feeling that the players were embarrassed after their performance. They have two games left before the end of the season and I’m hoping that the performances will be an improvement on tonight”.

Shipyard frustrated as decisions go against them.

The Shipyard left Yarrow Park with at least the point they deserved thanks to Kevin Masson’s late double, but were baffled by some of the decisions that went against them which ultimately denied them all three points. The visitors had two very strong penalty claims turned down in the second half and in the first Selkirk were fortunate that the referee took no action against Kenny Munro after his very poor tackle. Blair Grubb returned to the starting eleven after serving his suspension and Lee Henderson was promoted from the bench replacing the unavailable Anesu Tabengwa and a trialist respectively. Gordon Grieve, Brendan Napier and Martin Nedialkov were still out through a variety of reasons.

With the strong wind behind them Selkirk took the initiative from the off and Mikey Couser had to be sharp to gather a loose ball that bounced off an attacking head. A low cross from the right found no takers and Jamie Gibson shot wide as the Souters looked for the opener. A Masson free-kick was way off target before Shipyard linesman Andy MacDougall showed fantastic skill on the sidelines when stuck his flag up as he controlled a wayward pass. The Shipyard took the lead in the 43rd minute when Henderson pressurised the home defence into a mistake and when the ball broke to Grubb he drilled an angled shot into the net from 16yards. That lead was to last barely a minute when Callum Peoples found space at the edge of the box and fired a low shot into the bottom corner.

The Shipyard had a disastrous start to the second half when after Couser saved well with his legs the ball fell to Gibson who made no mistake from inside the area. The visitors had to replace the injured Grubb with Alex Peoples and went on to have a good spell of pressure as Masson shot over and then astonishingly had a penalty appeal waved away when Dale Robertson was bundled over as he tried to latch on to a through ball. Pete Bell shot straight at keeper John Dodds and in the 55th minute another strong penalty claim was turned down when Masson flicked the ball round his marker and was then tripped as he moved onto the ball. Against the run of play Selkirk increased their lead when Jason Inglis headed in a free-kick at the back post. The Shipyard were not out of the game and continued to create chances with Peoples, Robertson and Masson linking well with the latter’s shot drifting over the bar. Masson pulled a goal back in the 74th minute when he shot home from 16yards and although the keeper got a hand to the ball he could not keep it out. The Shipyard kept looking for the leveller and it duly arrived in the 89th minute when Masson got his head to a Stevie Connor long throw and the ball looped over the giant Dodds and into the net. A minute later the Shipyard almost stunned Yarrow Park when Dodds pulled off a superb save as he finger tipped a Stuart Innes header round the post for a corner. With the game deep in added time a Selkirk corner was headed narrowly wide in what was the final action of the match.

Manager Myles Allan was naturally disappointed not to win the match but reasoned after the game “We’ve had a lot of matches in the last couple of months where we thought that our performances merited more than we got. Today we were definitely not at our best but showed a bit of character to get back in the match when it didn’t look so good. After the disappointments in previous matches, we’ve maybe earned a bit of luck”. When asked about some decisions that went against his team Myles chose his words carefully and said “I’m convinced that we had two strong claims for penalties and their keeper pulled off a wonder save in the last couple of minutes to stop us winning. Our play might not have merited three points but it just shows the small margins between one point and three points in this league.

Teams: Selkirk: Dodds; Stephen; Munro; Milven; Pritchard; Johnson; Holness; Inglis; Gibson; Gay; C. Peoples (Bolton). Unused Subs: McManus & Butters.

Burntisland Shipyard: Couser; Crombie; Connor; Bridges; McKay; Bell; Grubb (A. Peoples); Innes; Masson; Robertson; Henderson. Unused Subs: Cunningham & McCrindle.

Super Strike Denies Shipyard A Point.

A sensational strike six minutes from time by substitute Mark Hendrie denied the Shipyard a share of the spoils as title chasing Craigroyston came from behind to take the points and close in on Coldstream at the top of the table. Craig McKay had given the Shipyard the lead just before the hour, however, the afore mentioned Hendrie equalised for Craigy, then stole the show with his late winner. Blair Grubb and Martin Nedialkov were missing through suspension, Gordon Grieve was injured and Brendan Napier was unavailable as Myles looked to try and halt Craigroyston’s surge up the table. Stevie Connor and Dale Robertson returned to the starting eleven having been unavailable at the weekend.

Craigroyston had the early pressure and forced a few corners that came to nothing before Kevin Masson had a half chance for the visitors when he latched on to a quick free-kick but he could not get a shot on target. A poor clearance from keeper Mikey Couser in the 13th minute led to a chance for Craigy but again the effort was off target. The Shipyard’s Robertson took a pass from Masson, however, he was closed down quickly and his shot was blocked. In the 29th minute a clever Masson free-kick found Stuart Innes in space but again the Craigy defence was alert to the danger and keeper Stuart Burnside was able to smother the ball. This sparked the game into life and Couser superbly tipped over a Bryan Wilson header that seemed destined for the net. Couser denied Wilson again, from the resultant corner, when he pushed away Wilson’s fierce strike from twenty yards. The Shipyard replied with a good run from Connor, whose pass found Innes at the edge of the box but the shot was well over the bar. Errol Douglas headed over from a reasonable position as Craigroyston tried in vain to break the deadlock before half-time.

Craigroyston pushed the Shipyard back in the early stages of the second half and engineered a couple of shooting opportunities, however, neither troubled Couser. A deflected Craig Anderson shot did give Couser work to do and again he was up to the task as he held the ball comfortably. Masson played in Anesu Tabengwa and his curled effort towards the back post was not too far away. A rash of yellow cards followed before the Shipyard shocked the hosts and took the lead. Craig McKay volleyed in at the back post from close range after a free-kick from the right hand side skimmed off a head in the middle and fell perfectly for him. In response Craig Dickson shows good close control on the edge of the Shipyard area and when he shot his effort was very close indeed. The home sides’ task seemed to get even more difficult in the 70th minute when Ewan MacIntosh was ordered off after receiving his second yellow card. The home side could have been reduced to nine men but the referee was unsighted when Dickson lunged in on Connor, who managed to continue after lengthy treatment. The Shipyard could have been two up with ten minutes to play when Tabengwa found Masson in the box but Craigroyston managed to block him as he pulled the trigger. That missed opportunity was to prove costly as the hosts went up the park and drew level. The ball broke to substitute Hendrie and he fired a powerful shot into the net from fifteen yards. Three minutes later Craigroyston completed their comeback with a tremendous strike. The Shipyard were hesitant in clearing their lines and when the ball broke to Hendrie some 20 yards out he fired in a venomous shot that was in the top corner before Couser even moved. That sparked scenes of wild celebrations as the home players realised that they had gotten off the hook. The Shipyard had one last chance when substitute Alex Peoples drove in a shot that was heading for the bottom corner until Burnside dived low to his right to gather.

After the match Myles was keen to emphasise his and Jason’s thoughts on how the game should be played by saying “Disregarding the score line, after the last three performances this was a huge improvement and somewhere close to what we are capable of. I’ve heard various people tell me that you can’t be successful in this league by playing nice football but when you look at Craigroyston and the other teams challenging for promotion, they are the teams that get the ball down and play”. He went on to add “It’s maybe also no coincidence that we play better against these teams. However, they can also win against the teams that play route one and that’s not something we’ve achieved yet. I’m confident that what we’re trying to implement is the best way forward and that if we keep playing with the same attitude as tonight then we’ll get the rewards soon”.

Neither side could do enough to earn the three points in this evenly contested 1st Division encounter.

Chances were at a premium in the opening stages as both teams struggled to deal with the fiery surface and strong wind.

The home side looked to have opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Jordan Crombie got on the end of a Stevie Connor cross at the back post but the referee ruled it out for offside against the midfielder.

It was the visitors who took the lead in the 40th minute. A long clearance caught the Shipyard defence on their heels and Michael Holness ran through before stroking the ball past Couser.

It took just 4 minutes for the home side to equalise though. A goal bound effort from Dale Robertson was halted by the arm of a defender and Brendan Napier made no mistake from the penalty spot.

The second half was also short of genuine goal scoring chances although Gavin Bridges will be disappointed not to have put his back post header on target after getting on the end of Stevie Connor’s corner in the 49th minute.

Brendan Napier cut inside from the right after 70 minutes but his curling effort went narrowly wide of the keeper’s right hand post.

The last chance of the match came in the 88th minute and fell to Selkirk’s Robert Gay who struck a direct free-kick with power but Couser did well to save at full stretch.

Burntisland Shipyard: Couser, Grieve, Nedialakov, Bridges, Innes, Bell, Tabengwa, Crombie, Connor, Napier, Robertson; Subs: Henderson, Peoples, Grubb, Masson, McCrindle

Selkirk: Dodds, Stephen, Munro, Milven, Pritchard, Inglis, Johnson, Watt, Gay, Holness; Subs: Peoples, Butters, McManus, Battle, Bolton

The visitors were left to rue their inability to defend set pieces once again as they lost this match on the artificial Netherdal surface.

The Shipyard welcomed back Brendan Napier after his holiday and he was influential as the game flowed from end to end without many goal scoring opportunities.

Burntisland’s first opportunity came in the 27th minute when Dale Robertson did well to create space wide on the right and his cross narrowly evaded the outstretched leg of Stevie Connor and the ball was gathered by the Gala keeper.

Shortly afterwards, the home side took the lead. A strong run from the Gala midfield was brought to an abrupt halt by Blair Grubb inside the box and Jason Darling made no mistake from the penalty spot.

The Shipyard drew level in the 55th minute when a Dale Robertson effort from outside the box looked to be heading goalwards before hitting the arm of a defender. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot for the second time in the match and Brendan Napier capped his return with a confident strike past the keeper.

Gala regained the lead in the 65th minute when Jason Darling rose unchallenged at the back post to nod past Couser and ensure the 3 points stayed in the borders.

Burntisland Shipyard: Couser, Grubb, Nedialakov, Bridges, McKay, Bell, Crombie, Innes, Connor, Napier, Robertson; Subs: Henderson, Peoples, Tabengwa, McCrindle

Damage done by Ramage.

The Shipyard suffered disappointment at Ormiston as a storming finish could not quite produce the goal they deserved as a fantastic save from David Simmonds and the underside of the bar denied them. On both occasions the unlucky player was Dale Robertson and earlier Simmons kept out another goal bound Robertson effort. With Robbie Cunningham, Gordon Grieve, Kevin Masson, Brendan Napier and Anesu Tabengwa all unavailable for a variety of reasons, Martin Nedialkov made his debut and Jordan Crosbie made his first start after a couple of substitute appearances. Two trialists also took a place on the bench.

The Shipyard got off to a dream start by taking the lead in the third minute. Stephen Connor done well out wide on the right to engineer space to deliver a cross and it was pinpoint accurate as it gave Pete Bell the easy task of nodding the ball into the net. An acrobatic effort from Mark Leslie called Mikey Couser into action and Couser also did well to stand up and block the follow up from Richard Weir. Brian McEwan headed over from a good position as Ormiston looked to draw level and they were not to be denied when Weir was on hand to tap in a cross from the right hand side. Robertson and Weir had attempts for their respective sides that were off target, then Alex Peoples of the Shipyard was denied twice within seconds as firstly his angled shot was blocked by a defender. His follow up shot was pushed away by Simmonds at the expense of a corner. The Shipyard enjoyed a good spell of pressure as the half entered its final few minutes but it was Ormiston that went the closest when Couser had to block with his legs from Conor Ramage.

Ormiston stunned the Shipyard with a goal just 35 seconds after the restart when a corner skimmed off the head of a defender and Ramage was at the back post to head the ball into the net. The Shipyard were level within seven minutes when a short corner gave Connor the chance to fire in a shot that was blocked but fell to Crosbie who knocked the ball home from close range. Ramage was off target with a header for Ormiston when he should have done better with the space afforded to him. A deep cross from Nedialkov had Simmonds in a flap and he was happy in the end to knock the ball away from under his bar. A well worked free kick from the Shipyard saw a powerful Robertson drive pushed away as the Shipyard enjoyed a good spell. However, it was Ormiston who took the lead when Ramage got on the end of a through ball and from a very tight angle found the corner of the net. Connor and Robertson linked well to set up a chance for Lee Henderson but the Shipyard sub dragged his shot wide. Simmonds lost the ball in an aerial challenge but redeemed himself when he seemed to touch Robertson’s effort over for a corner though a goal kick was given. A Gavin Bridges header was cleared for a corner as both teams continued to attack and Couser was at full stretch to catch a Craig Fisher free kick. As the game moved in to the closing stages the Shipyard were throwing everything at Ormiston and when a free kick fell to Robertson in the box Simmonds denied him with an excellent save. Once again when a free kick was delivered into the box Robertson was on the end of it again. This time it was the underside on the crossbar that denied him the goal he richly deserved and as the ball bounced down on the line it was booted clear.

Manager Myles Allan reflected after the match “I think the guys will feel a bit disappointed after that today. Every one of them put in a great shift but ultimately if you concede three goals so cheaply, it’s always going to be an uphill struggle. It’s certainly the best start we’ve had but we didn’t build on it when we should have. At half time, the very last thing I said was that we couldn’t afford to start the second half slowly. 30 seconds later, we’ve gone 2-1 down. We worked hard to get back level and managed to do that. We then conceded another poor goal from our perspective. The pleasing thing though is that the guys never gave in and kept creating chances. But unfortunately we couldn’t take one more. We now look forward to going down to Gala on Tuesday and hopefully we can get one or two more bodies back for that one”.

Teams: Ormiston: Simmonds; Nisbet; Cornhill; Leslie; Fairnie; Adams; Miller (Carter); Fisher; Weir (Calder); Ramage; McEwan. Unused Subs: Purves; Donnelly.

Burntisland Shipyard: Couser; Grubb; Nedialkov (Ballie); Bridges; McKay; Bell; Crosbie; Innes (Henderson); Connor; Robertson; Peoples (McCrindle). Unused Sub: Mooney.
