Debut Man Wilson sets up Shipyard Win

The availability of  spaces on the team lines highlighted the difficulties facing both teams in fielding full squads. Ferguson returned to the Shipyard team after an extended absence and Paul Wilson was listed as a substitute for his first outing in a Shipyard strip. It was Wilson’s appearance in the 2nd half that was to set up the  Shipyard win.

It took until the 17th minute for any goal mouth action to materialise and it was Chalmers who was called into action, his one handed reaction save only just averting  Miller’s attempt on goal. Shipyard just had the edge on play for the remainder of the half with Williams coming close twice and McCue just failing to find the net when through one on one in the 35th minute. Chalmers saved the Shipyard once again, on the half time whistle, when he saved from 3 yards. Miller should have done better following some good build up work on Star’s right wing.

Ten minutes into the second half saw McCue clear but his attempt, once again, scraped the outside of the post. Substitute Wilson replaced the injured Cook and within  a minute had his first attempt on goal, his lobbed effort leaving  keeper Clement  stranded but just failing to find the net. Four minutes later Wilson’s early control and pass set up Hamilton who finished well with a drive from the edge of the box.

Shipyard failed to press home their advantage and it was Star that pressed for an equaliser, coming close in the 63rd minute and just failing to get on the end of several free kicks given away by some rather reckless Shipyard challenges. With the game opening up, Shipyard saw good efforts by Whyte , Dow and Brough just failing to hit the target. Some good link up work involving Wilson, McCue and Hamilton set up Dow on the Shipyard left and his carefully measured effort struck the back of the net to settle things for the Shipyard.

Manager Whitehead was pleased with the display and  was particularly happy to see his defence manage another a shut out.
