Burntisland Shipyard 1-4 Heriot Watt University

The Shipyard finally got their league season underway, however, it was not the start they were looking for as they lost 4-1 to Heriot Watt University at Recreation Park. After a first half that the Shippy probably just shaded in terms of chances the teams went in all square at 1-1. There were Shipyard debuts for Dean Hunter, Iain Millar, Evan Stanfield and Jason Finlay together with a couple of well-known trialist faces.

The Shipyard were dealt a huge blow as early as the seventh minute when Jonny Galloway limped off with a knee injury and he was replaced by his twin brother Jordan, much to the confusion of the referee though both technical areas seen the funny side of it. Neither team was creating much in the way of chances until the Shippy took the lead in the 28th minute. Stanfield gathered the ball inside the area and quickly moved it inside to Andy Watt. He in turn moved it on to Galloway who took a touch before steering the ball home at the back post. Finlay went close a couple of minutes later as he shot over from the edge of the box. The visitors levelled on 33 minutes when the Shippy were caught out by a long ball that Lewis Morton got to ahead of the Trialist keeper and his dinked effort had enough on it to beat the retreating defence. Justin Hogg should have done better when he collected the ball in space a few yards from goal but his tame shot was easily saved. Galloway was denied his second by a fine save from Calum Reid as the keeper touched the powerful drive over.

Heriot Watt had to be on their toes to scramble away a corner in the 58th minute but after that they took control of the match and scored three quickfire goals to secure the points. Gregor MacDonald produced two fine finishes in the 66th and 70th minutes to give his side a two-goal lead and when Aidan Quinn rattled one in off the underside of the bar the game was done and dusted. Reece Brown had Reid stretching to push the ball away but unfortunately the Shipyard rarely threatened in the second half.
