Burntisland Shipyard 1 Eyemouth United 0

Final match win for resilient Shippy.

The Shipyard concluded their season on a high with a narrow but deserved win over Eyemouth United on Saturday at Recreation Park. A goal from Donald Hyslop in the 74th minute turned out to be the winner but unfortunately Ormiston’s win at Tweedmouth meant that the three points were not enough to lift the Shippy off the bottom of the table. Given the position the team was in a the bottom of the league, it was no surprise that once again it was a depleted squad that was available to the management team. A huge amount of credit has to go to those guys who have stuck with it and worked their socks off all year for this great Club.

Eyemouth had the larger share of possession in the first half but neither team created much in the way of chances and it was really no surprise that the score was 0-0 at the interval. The second half saw more in the way of goalmouth action and it was the Shipyard who looked the more likelier as the game progressed. The game sprung to life in the 59th minute when the Shippy were awarded a penalty. Scott Powrie burst into the Eyemouth box and went down under the challenge from United keeper Adam Mutch. The referee pointed to the spot despite Mutch’s protestations and to be fair to the keeper it looked a bit harsh. Mutch would feel justice was done when he dived low to his left to save Powrie’s attempt. The disappointment of passing up this golden opportunity did not have an adverse effect on the Shippy players as they took the game to the visitors, with Hyslop and Powrie linking well they started creating chances and ultimately taking one of these opportunities to take the lead. When Sean Cusick fired in an angled drive Mutch could only push the ball out and Hyslop was on hand to coolly lift the ball over the keeper, who had recovered well, for a composed finish to the delight of the Shipyard contingent.

The only disappointment for the Shippy was the late red card shown to Conor Drury for a second yellow with the game deep in added time.
