Shippy lose out in five goal thriller.
A bumper crowd of 211 enjoyed their first taste of Friday night football at Recreation Park but sadly for the hosts, they could not produce the result the bulk of the crowd were looking for. Despite the Shippy taking an early lead it was Lochore who came out on top as they established a 3-1 lead, which was pegged back to 3-2 as the game entered the final fifteen minutes, however, the Shipyard could not force an equaliser while probably enjoying their best spell of the match. The injury hit Shipyard squad was bolstered with four loan signing coming in from Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts as Iain Millar, Shaun Keatings, Lee Henderson, Nathan Feeley, Josh Urquhart and Raymond Crichton remained side-lined.
There were five ex-Shipyard players in the Welfare squad and it was one of them who gifted Shipyard the lead in the eighth minute. A cross into the box was headed into his own net by Ethan Anderson giving keeper Dale Wotherspoon no chance, with the ball going in off the post. It did not take the visitors long to restore parity as Joe Kirby finished off a good move with a composed finish. Shipyard keeper Scott Costello produced a great save from a close range header and at the other end Ben Anthony shot wide from a good position. Ben then passed up a great opportunity in the 33rd minute when he knocked the ball over from close range.
Lochore made a dream start to the second half with a goal from Sean Cusick in the 47th minute. Shipyard manager Dave Costello made a couple of changes as he looked to get back into it, however, Lochore scored again as Kirby rifled the ball home from the edge of the box with 66 minutes on the clock. Shipyard reduced the deficit in the 75th minute when Jack Wilson powered a header home from a fine Jordan Galloway cross. Shipyard pushed looking for an equaliser but they could not breach a stubborn Lochore defence.
Costello said after the match “I am obviously disappointed with the result but on the positive side I thought the loanees did well in what was a difficult game for them to come in to.”
Next Saturday (16/10/2021) Shipyard face Lowland League side University of Stirling in the second round of the Challenge Cup. Kick off at Recreation Park is 2.30pm. Another big home support would be most welcome.
