Young Shippy side well beaten.
The Shipyard kicked off the new season with a heavy defeat to Lothian Thistle HV at Saughton Enclosure last night. With the new management team of Toorie Winter and Chris Maxwell still assembling a squad it was a young and inexperienced team that took to the field. It was always going to be a daunting task facing the Shippy boys given the quality and experience that Lothian possess.
The Shipyard did well for the opening 25 – 30 minutes but once the hosts opened the scoring if proved to be a difficult night with Thistle laying siege to young Brandon Connor’s goal. And although Connor made a couple of mistakes, he more than made up for them with some outstanding saves over the course of the match. Lothian led 3-0 at half time thanks to goals from Anthony Muir, Sean Wringe and Jamie Devlin. A double from Willis Hare, and another for Devlin made it six before James Guy scored the goal of the night to complete the scoring. The Shippy did have some chances with Daniel Roberts forcing Kevin Swain into a decent save and Ben Couper rattled the bar with a fierce strike late on.
On the bright side the Shipyard won’t face that quality of opposition every week as Toorie and Chris look to develop a competitive squad over the coming weeks.
