Controversial goal sinks Shipyard.
The Shipyard are still searching for their first league win of the season after going down to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Newtongrange Star at New Victoria Park on Saturday. The Shippy were strengthened by the return of the four players that sat out the first two games due to suspension.
In what was a bit of a dour battle there was not much in the way of goalmouth action until the only goal of the match arrived in the 32nd minute and to say it was controversial would be an understatement. An effort was looped over keeper Scott Costello; however, Craig Watt was on hand to head the ball clear before it crossed the line. Unfortunately, at least for the Shipyard, the referee thought otherwise and awarded a goal. Even the home players seemed a little stunned that the goal was given as none of them had claimed for a goal. Sometimes it goes for you and sometimes it doesn’t.
The Shippy lost young Cammy Lewis to an injury which may rule him out for a spell and the diminutive midfielder was replaced by Darrell Anthony who was making his first appearance of the season.
Newtongrange were reduced to ten men with fifteen minutes remaining when Scott hay was shown a second yellow card after a cynical foul on substitute Ben Anthony. Despite having a numerical advantage, the Shippy could not force an equaliser with jack Wilson coming closest when he headed wide.
On Saturday (13/08/2022) we travel to face Dunbar United for a league match with a 2.30pm kick-off at New Countess Park.
