Shipyard lose by odd goal in five

Two late goals saw the Shipyard lose by 3 goals to 2 against St Andrews Amateurs at Cockshaugh Park in this latest friendly match. With holidays and unavailability still hampering manager Whitehead’s team selection, the news that Lee Small will be out for possibly 3 months, due to the fractured shin he suffered in the friendly against East fife, was a big blow to say the least. It was a very young and experimental team that took the field.

The Shipyard fell behind to a headed goal from around 10 yards in the 8th minute. Josh Williams equalised with a fine finish after 15 minutes and Mark Brough scrambled the ball into the net to give the Shipyard the lead on the half hour. Just on half-time Andy Martin in the Shipyard goal pulled off a fine double save to keep his team in front. The second half saw a whole host of substitutions with even manager whitehead taking the field. The highlight of the half for the Shipyard was a fine run and shot from Conor Hay. Two poor defensive clearances in the 82nd and 87th minutes saw possession conceded to St Andrews and on both occasions the ball found its way into the Shipyard net. After the match Billy Whitehead said “It was another good work out and it gave me the chance to have a look at some players and try out some different things, however, I now need to get the squad together so that we can be ready for the season starting in a couple of weeks time”.
