Glendale Plastics League

Star Hearts. 0  Burntisland Shipyard. 3

The Shipyard banked all three points at Treaton Park, Star, after two recent poor performances against these opponents and Balgonie Scotia. Kicking down the hill in the first half the Shipyard got off to a tremendous start in 5 minutes, when after Greig O’Hanlon had forced a corner, he was on hand at the back post to slam the ball into the net when Star failed to clear the corner. Star went close when a shot was deflected and looped onto the top of the bar but, it was the Shipyard who doubled their lead in 14 minutes when they scored an identical goal to the first, this time it was Bryan Cook who was the scorer, again from a Brown corner. In the 18th minute it was almost 3-0 but Muirhead’s free kick from the edge of the box hit the post and was scrambled clear. Star were not out of it and it took two superb saves from Chalmers within a minute, to keep the Shipyard’s two goal lead intact at half time.

Two minutes into the second half the Shipyard should have been out of sight when Millar was sent clean through on keeper Pratt but his weak shot was easily saved. This proved to be be Pratt’s last action as minutes later he had to go off injured and was replaced ex Shipyard player Grieve, an outfield player. It was only the Referee’s whistle that was stopping the Shipyard from increasing their lead as on three occasions he blew for marginal offside decisions that could have gone the other way. In the 85th minute Scott Chalmers capped his man of the match display with another fine save with Ferguson mopping up on the line behind him. The Shipyard went straight up the park and when Johnston’s effort hit the post, Grieve pulled off an unbelievable save from O’Hanlon’s follow up shot. In the 90th minute sub Reid broke up the park and was fouled in the box. When the referee got there, he awarded the Shipyard a penalty, which surprisingly was taken by Jimmy Hardie, who lashed the ball high into the net to round off an impressive display by the whole team.
