Burntisland Shipyard 1-4 Peebles Rovers

Woeful Shippy suffer heavy defeat.

A hangover from the Scottish Cup defeat? Missing key players? A one off performance? These are questions that need to be answered, quickly, if the Shipyard are to get back amongst the leaders at the top of the table. Credit to Peebles as they played well and capitalised on the chances that came their way, however, some of the defending in the build up to their goals was questionable to say the least. Iain Millar was suspended with Cameron Shaw and Craig Watt was unavailable along with the growing list of long term injuries.

Shipyard started well with Jordan Galloway shooting just over with a minute on the clock and then Sandy Strang headed a corner down into a dangerous area but no one could get on the ball after keeper Cameron Hanratty pushed the ball out. Peebles took the lead when possession was conceded around the halfway line at the expense of a corner. The Shipyard were sleeping when the flag kick was played back to Ross Lamb and from the corner of the box, he smashed the ball home. Ben Anthony had a good chance in the 26th minute when he burst clear with Hanratty doing well to save with his legs. Scott Costello tipped over a drive on the half hour mark and B. Anthony shot wide a couple of minutes later. Shippy survived a huge scare when Costello had to come to the edge of his area to block and Mark James was in the right place to block the follow-up shot. Scott Orrock missed a chance following his surging run forward, when a poorly hit clearance fell to him, but he could not direct his strike on target. B. Anthony also shot over as the half drew to a conclusion.

Peebles doubled their lead seven minutes into the second period when the home defence allowed the ball to be worked across the park and Mark Shiels knocked the ball home. Shaun Keatings shot wide before Shippy missed their best opportunity of the match so far. A delightful ball was played into B. Anthony with not a soul near him in the box, however, he sclaffed his shot weakly into the keeper’s hands. Peebles put the game beyond the Shipyard with 15 minutes remaining when Shiels scored his second following more calamitous defending. B. Anthony was off target again before Shippy pulled a goal back when Strang headed home powerfully from a corner. Hanratty then pulled off a stunning save to deny Darrell Anthony after his strike was deflected. Jack Wilson headed an Orrock cross wide as Shippy tried in vain to get another one back as the clock ticked down. Shipyard conceded a fourth in a dreadful fashion as Costello tried to beat his man following a pass back, only to be dispossessed by David Lindsay who gleefully knocked the ball into the empty net.

We travel to the Warout Stadium next week (18/09/2021) to face Glenrothes in a Conference B league match.
