Balgonie Scotia. 1 Burntisland Shipyard.4

Scottish Brewers Cup 2nd round

Balgonie Scotia 1 Burntisland Shipyard 4

Shipyard progressed into the semi final of the competition with a comfortable win in the mud at King George Park. On a sodden pitch the referee allowed the game to go ahead, however, by half time the pitch was just a mud bath.

Shooting up the hill into the wind and rain the Shipyard settled well and tried to pass the ball around. After 16 minutes a great through ball from Bristow sent Neil Johnston clear and he made no mistake to put the Shipyard ahead. Both teams created chances with Scotia being awarded free kicks near the Shipyard box. From one of these Scotia drew level when the ball took a deflection off the wall to wrong foot the keeper and make it all square after 39 minutes.

Scotia started the second half the better team and pushed forward up the hill. They were rocked back, however, in the 61st minute, when taking a goal kick the keeper slipped in the mud and kicked the ball straight to Johnston whose delightful first time lob flew over the keeper and into the net. The Shipyard were now in control again and were looking to finish the tie off. This duly happened in the 75th minute when Stephen Bristow burst down the right side and somehow his cross/shot eluded the keeper to make it 3-1. Four minutes later it was all over when Bristow scored again with another fine finish. Credit must go to all the players on both sides for trying to play football in such difficult conditions, special mention must go to Craig Hutt who managed to keep his strip clean, whilst everyone else’s was filthy.
