The Shipyard were well beaten by a top quality side who played fine fast flowing football, particularly in the first half, showing why they are the Highland League champions. Owen McCue went close early on for the Shipyard with his well hit shot turned away by Jags keeper Main. Thistle took the lead in the 20th minute when a rebound off the crossbar was headed in from a few yards out. McCue and Small had efforts for the Shipyard before three goals in the last 8 minutes of the first half had Thistle on easy street. In a physical encounter three Shipyard players had to receive treatment for cuts to the face or head before the half-time whistle.
During the second half both teams made a whole host of changes giving all their players a game. The only goal in the second half came in the 67th minute when Buckie scored their fifth with a fine strike from 16 yards. Manager Billy Whitehead said “I was proud of my players today. They tried to play their usual passing game and succeeded in spells, though the gulf in terms of fitness, quality and physical strength showed. Hopefully we can take plenty out of playing this calibre of team”.
The Shipyard would like to thank all the players, staff, officials and supporters of Buckie Thistle for making the long journey down to Burntisland and hope that they enjoyed their visit to Burntisland.
