Ten man Shippy advance in style.
The Shipyard bounced back from their midweek disappointment to blow away Ormiston in the 1st round of the Football Nation Cup. Despite being reduced to ten men with over half an hour remaining, they continued to dominate proceedings as they ran out 5-1 winners. The Shippy were 3-1 ahead when Tam Graham was dismissed but they did not let the numerical disadvantage affect them, in fact they looked like adding to their tally every time they went forward.

The manager shuffled the pack after Wednesday’s defeat with Charlie Simpson and Tam Graham coming into the starting eleven. Ormiston had the first chance in the 11th minute but former Shipyard player Keith Buckley could not find the target from just inside the area. The Shippy took the lead in the 16th minute when Callum McAulay smartly turned in Jordan Galloway’s corner at the front post. Shortly after Dean Anderson headed over from another Galloway corner. A second goal arrived in the 24th minute when Jordan Galloway headed in from close range following McAulay’s lobbed effort being parried into his path by keeper Reece Smail. An excellent Johnny Galloway cross was cleared from danger by Kieran Watson as the Shipyard turned the screw. Ormiston got back into the match following some poor defending by the Shipyard, allowing Buckley to bear down on goal. His initial effort struck the post, however, the ball rebounded kindly for the big striker and he netted from a few yards out. A great ball across the face of Ormiston’s goal was begging to be knocked home by any of the three Shipyard players who got into the six-yard box but nobody could get the decisive touch. Jordan Galloway saw a driven shot deflected wide as the first half drew to a close.
It took the Shipyard only three second half minutes to restore their two-goal advantage as a Johnny Galloway strike ricocheted off a defender and into the net. Two minutes later a great save by Smail denied Reece Brown as he leapt to tip Brown’s 22 yard free-kick onto the bar and away to safety. Ormiston were thrown a lifeline in the 58th minute when Graham stupidly picked up a second yellow card for reacting when his throw-in was deliberately blocked by the hand of an Ormiston player. That lifeline only lasted two minutes as Brown smashed an unstoppable shot beyond Smail. Despite being a man down the Shippy were rampant with Brown tormenting the visitors defence every time he got the ball. The youngster hit the bar with a header and probably should have done better when he was put through one on one with the keeper. Johnny Galloway was just off target with two strikes but sandwiched in between was another goal from Brown as he rounded off a good move to add the fifth goal in the 74th minute. Substitute Pete Bell found himself in unchartered territory inside the visitors six-yard box but he fluffed his lines by knocking the ball into the keeper’s arms when it looked easier to score.

The Shipyard will now travel to face Dunbar United, who somewhat surprisingly beat the more fancied Linlithgow Rose 4-0, in the second round of the competition. Next Saturday (25/08/2018) it’s back to league business as the Shipyard welcome Bonnyrigg Rose to Recreation Park, kick off 2.30pm.
