Shipyard still searching for first League win.
The Shipyard slumped to a 2-0 defeat against Dunbar United at New Countess Park and although the two goals conceded were avoidable no one could complain about the outcome as Dunbar very much deserved to win. It was the same old story for manager Dave Costello as he only had fourteen of his twenty two man squad to pick from, for what was always going to be a tough away fixture.
After an uneventful opening quarter of an hour the game sprung into life when Darrell Anthony got his head onto a fine deep cross from Lewis Ross and Dunbar keeper Sean Brennan did very well to deny the Shippy midfielder. Within a minute Scott Costello was called into action as he pushed away a fierce drive from wide on the right. Dunbar created another couple of chances, however, Costy was unduly troubled by either effort. The Shipyard had another chance in the 38th minute when Dan Thomson gathered the ball in the box, turned but was unfortunate to see his shot blocked. The Shipyard had a double let off just before half-time when a low ball across the six-yard box was missed by the Shippy defence and the Dunbar forward somehow put the ball over the bar when it seemed easier to score. Costello then produced a fine save to deny the Seasiders again.
Dunbar opened the scoring in the 50th minute when the defence failed to clear the ball and Johnny Edmond capitalised smashing the ball home from eight yards. A slack pass back led to Dunbar’s second and although Costello did enough to put the forward off, allowing the ball to fall for Liam Bell, the Shippy defender couldn’t get it clear and substitute Jonny Grotlin had the simple task of scoring with his first touch. The Shipyard huffed and puffed but never seriously troubled Brennan in the home goals and it was the hosts who finished on the front foot and looked the most likely. Manager Dave Costello had little to say after the match other than “The lack of bodies killed us again today.”
Next Saturday we travel to Hannah Park as we meet Shotts Bon Accord in the Trade Radiators South Challenge Cup. Kick-off is at 2pm.
