Shippy fail to build on weekend performance

Crossgates Primrose 4 Burntisland Shipyard 1.

A Shipyard squad that contained no fewer than seven teenagers failed to impress, particularly in the second half as they went down 4-1 against Crossgates at Humbug Park. Myles gave a run out to three young trialists with the more experienced Joe Samson, Brendan Napier and Saturday’s hat-trick hero Adam Doig all unavailable. Connor McManus was rested as his groin injury was still troubling him. Craig Lowe returned from holiday with Kevin Masson, Dale Robertson and Stevie Connor returning to the squad.

Crossgates took the lead in the 19th minute when their player was allowed far too much time at the edge of the box to turn and get his shot away, with his effort finding the bottom corner. The Shipyard equalised in the 35th minute when Jordan Crombie played a fine pass to Keith Buckley who netted from around 12 yards.

The second half started with a whole host of changes to both teams with the home team being more physical, indeed the referee missed a couple of nasty challenges in the first few minutes. Crossgates regained the lead in the 63rd minute when Jordan Mushet in the Shipyard goal failed to gather a low cross and the ball was bundled over the line. The homesters scored a third when a corner was allowed to drop in the six yard box and again the ball was bundled in. The Shipyards misery was complete with eleven minutes remaining when from another corner the Crossgates player was allowed a free header inside the six yard box and made no mistake.

After the match Myles looked to put a positive spin on proceedings when he said “While it was a disappointing performance, it’s maybe a good thing to happen. We’ve played well in the previous three matches but tonight we never really got started. It’s hopefully a reminder that when things aren’t going well, you have to at least match your opponent’s work rate. We didn’t do that tonight.

On a positive note we gave starts to 5 guys who hadn’t started any of our previous friendlies so those guys got some much needed minutes under their belts”.
