Burntisland Shipyard 1-1 Whitehill Welfare

Honours even in dour draw.

The Shipyard and Whitehill had to settle for a share of the points at a damp Recreation Park on Saturday. The Shippy had to see out the final few minutes with ten men after keeper Scott Costello was sent off in very strange circumstances. Having received a yellow card for conceding a penalty in the 62nd minute the big keeper went to retrieve the ball later in the match and had an apparent altercation with a spectator which the referee deemed was unsporting behaviour, for which he flashed a second yellow card. With no substitute keeper available, Ben Anthony took the gloves for the closing minutes. The Shippy took the lead three minutes before the interval when Jack Wilson scored his 4th goal of the season, however, the visitors drew level seventeen minutes into the second half after converting the afore mentioned spot kick meaning the points were shared. Thankfully some of the holiday makers and injured players returned to the fold for this week’s match and manager Dave Costello would have been relieved that only five were missing this week. There was a first Shipyard start for young Rhys Wardlaw who is currently on loan from Inverkeithing.

The visitors were the better team in the first half without creating too much in the way of chances though neither did the Shippy with only a Benji header worthy of note before the deadlock was broken just before the interval when Big Jack shot home from the edge of the box. The Shippy tested Welfare keeper Marc Anderson a couple of times at the start of the second half, however, it was the visitors who scored through Ryan Weir’s penalty. The spot kick was awarded after Costello had brought down Ty O’Neill. Neither team could get a decisive goal in the final 28 minutes and as mentioned Anthony wasn’t troubled in the last few minutes following the red card incident.
