History was created at Recreation Park on Tuesday night as the Shipyard won the Fife Cup for the first time ever. Since joining the Fife FA in 1932 the famous old trophy has never found its way to Burntisland. However, all that changed as the Shippy romped to a 4-0 over a young Cowdenbeath side as two goals in each half saw the home side lift the cup.
Brian Breen got the Shipyard off to the perfect start when his looping header beat Ben Swinton in the Cowden goals with less than a minute on the clock and a great finish from Johnny Galloway in the 20th minute put the Shippy two up. The Shipyard dominated for long spells and only some desperate defending by Cowden kept the home attack out. John Martin headed home from a corner in the 63rd minute and the Shippy’s name was as good as on the trophy when Galloway got his second and his team’s fourth when he knocked home a loose ball in the 72nd minute. Cowdenbeath kept plugging away and Ryan Adamson pulled off a great fingertip save to maintain his clean sheet.
Given the circumstances that this was a historic night for the Club, there were naturally jubilant scenes as captain Sandy Strang, surrounded by his team mates, lifted the trophy. Manager Grant Brough broke off from the celebrations to briefly say, “I am absolutely delighted for everyone associated with the Club”.
