A much changed Shipyard eleven slumped to a heavy defeat against an Edinburgh College team that played with a quality that belied their lowly position in Conference X. Despite the backing of a bumper Friday night crowd the Shippy produced a below par performance as they created very little in the way of chances and they can have no complaints about the final outcome. Lewis Ross, Matty Miller, Shaun Keatings, Sam Glancy, Darrell Anthony and Ben Anthony all dropped out for various reasons and they were replaced by Lee Henderson, Dan Thomson, Mark James, Sandy Strang, Luke Mahady and Josh Urquhart with the latter making his first appearance since picking up an injury in early August.
A long-range effort from Edinburgh hit the top of Scott Costello’s crossbar while at the other end a Henderson drive was not too far wide of the target, that being the highlights of a dull opening forty minutes. Costello held a twenty yard drive and again Henderson was involved as his cross come shot had to be tipped over by College keeper Ciaran Cairns. Just before the break Costello did well, at full stretch, to tip away a ball that came off the head of his own player.
There was more action in the second half as the visitors took the initiative and a ball to the back post might have been turned in had the forward been more alert. A flighted ball from the angle of the box landed on top of the net though it looked like Costello had it covered. In a rare Shipyard attack they should have taken the lead when half-time substitute B. Anthony engineered some space for himself but failed to hit the target as he dragged his shot just wide of the post. Back at the other end Craig Watt was in the right place at the right time to clear the ball off the line as the visitors once again pressed. Edinburgh finally broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute when Joe McBride headed home from twelve yards. The lead was doubled three minutes later when Mark McGovern drove his free-kick into the corner of the net. After a flurry of substitutions from both teams the Shippy conceded a sloppy third goal when a low ball across the box was turned in by Kriss Gaff from around six yards. As the game moved into added time the Shipyard conceded a fourth goal via the penalty spot after Costello brought down the College forward as he burst into the box. McGovern converted in what was the last kick of the match. After the match manager Dave Costello reflected “I made a lot of changes for tonight, which was always my intention, and it showed as we struggled to get any momentum. I didn’t think it was a 4-0 match, that being said, they were as good as anyone we have faced this season.”
Next Saturday we make the short trip to Dalgety Bay to face Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts in another League Cup Section D match. Kick-off is at 2pm.

The Shipyard were made to rue a whole host of missed first half opportunities, including a penalty, as Newburgh fought back to earn a point in this League Cup encounter at Recreation Park on Saturday. The Shippy only had Ben Anthony’s 16th minute goal to show for their dominant first half showing and after Newburgh equalised midway through the second period the Shipyard could not fashion a winner in the final twenty odd minutes. Scott Orrock and Matty Miller replaced Lee Henderson and Dan Thomson in the starting eleven following last weeks win at Preston Athletic.
The visitors had the first chance in the 4th minute but Michael Perrie headed straight into the arms of Scott Costello. A minute later the Shippy had a glorious chance to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty. This was of the stonewall variety as Benji was unceremoniously tripped in the box. Jack Wilson stepped up to take the kick, however, he was denied by Newburgh keeper Mark Robertson who dived low to his left to save. Darrell Anthony then saw his follow up shot hit the underside of the bar before the visitors scrambled the ball away at the expense of a corner and from the set piece another attempt was cleared off the line. Costello held another Perrie header and a minute later Shaun Keatings burst down the right wing and his cross found Benji but the visitors defence were quick to block the strikers shot. The Shippy broke the deadlock in the 16th minute when Benji drove forward and his shot from around twenty yards beat Robertson with what looked like the aid of a deflection. After this Robertson became the Newburgh hero with a string of great saves as he denied, B. Anthony, Wilson and Orrock. There was a moment of controversy in the 45th minute with the visitors claiming for a goal or a penalty after Costello missed a cross and the loose ball was turned goalwards, only for Craig Watt to block it and clear the danger. The referee was of the opinion that Watt had blocked with his chest which seemed to be correct and that the ball had not crossed the line which seemed questionable. This raised the temperature as both teams left the park following the half-time whistle.
The Shipyard kept up the pressure at the start of the second period though the chances were not coming so easily with Robertson only stretched in the 59th minute when he saved from Benji again. The Shippy were stunned when Newburgh drew level after 67 minutes when Rory Marshall’s shot from the edge of the box deceived Costello and found the bottom left hand corner of his net. Despite have the majority of possession the Shipyard could not create another clear cut chance and indeed they had Costello to thank as he produced a fine diving save to deny the visitors an unlikely winner in the 90th minute. There was still time for Newburgh to be reduced to 10 men as Sam Kirkham received a second yellow for a foul, despite their claims that it was a case of mistaken identity. Manager Dave Costello was disappointed after the game as he bemoaned his team’s lack of penetration when he said “We lost our way a bit in the second half. We didn’t move the ball quickly enough as we always took an extra touch. That being said we only have ourselves to blame as we should have been out of sight in the first half”.
The Shipyard are scheduled to play Edinburgh College at Oriam on Friday night; however, this may be subject to change given pitch availability. Further details will be announced as soon as they are available.

The Shipyard put a dent in Preston’s title hopes win a superb comeback win at Pennypit Park on Saturday. A perfect hat-trick from Jack Wilson, a left foot, right foot and headed effort ensured the burly striker was the Shippy man of the match, though every man played a role in ensuring the three points. The pitch was in decent condition despite the requirement of a morning inspection and the teams served up a no holds barred thriller for the crowd. Scott Orrock, Shaun Keatings and Mark James all dropped out of the squad from the last competitive match three weeks ago at Newburgh due to suspension, Injury and unavailability. Lee Henderson, Jordan Galloway and Darrell Anthony all started in their stead.
Ben Anthony saw an early attempt saved by home keeper Dale Pennycuick as the Shippy started brightly, however, it was Preston who struck first when a low cross from the right-hand side was turned home by Jonathan Grotlin from inside the six-yard box with eleven minutes on the clock. The Panners held the upper hand as the match progressed, that being said, Shippy keeper Scott Costello was never seriously troubled. The Shipyard drew level in the 26th minute when Sam Glancy’s delightfully flighted free-kick was headed home by Wilson from around six yards out. The visitors could only maintain parity for four minutes as Preston regained the lead in fortuitous fashion. A long ball lumped up the park skimmed the top of Iain Millar’s head and fell kindly for Grotlin who gave Costy no chance with a neat, lobbed finish. Costello produced a good reaction save to deny Preston when the ball was stabbed towards goal from close range as half-time loomed.
Brandon Archibald hit a shot narrowly wide before the Shippy seized the initiative. In the 51st minute a well worked move saw Benji gather the ball and his pinpoint cross was easily knocked home by big Jack and once again the Shipyard were level. Five minutes later the tables were turned completely as the Shippy took the lead with Wilson’s hat-trick goal. And what a goal it was as he received the ball from Dan Thomson before looking up and smashing an unstoppable drive into Pennycuick’s top left-hand corner, much to the delight of the Shipyard contingent in the crowd. Preston pushed hard for an equaliser and both Millar and Craig Watt made good clearances as they mopped up everything that was coming their way. Despite the late pressure Costello was not unduly troubled and the Shippy were able to wind the clock down and see out the four minutes of added time.
Manager Dave Costello was obviously delighted with the result when he said after the match “To come from behind twice and then go on to win was really pleasing. The boys gave me everything and ultimately deserved their win against a good side who are challenging for the title.” He went on to add “Naturally big Jack will get all the plaudits and deservedly so, but there were very good performances throughout the team with boys coming in having not had much football in recent weeks and they never let me down.”
The League Cup group stages now takes centre stage for the next month or so and we kick-off our campaign with a home tie, our first in six weeks, against Newburgh Juniors at Recreation Park. Kick-off is at 2.30pm.

Burntisland Shipyard: S. Costello; L. Ross; L. Henderson (M. Miller); J. Galloway (S. Strang); I. Millar; C. Watt; D. Thomson (L. Mahady); D. Anthony; B. Anthony; J. Wilson; S. Glancy.
The Shipyard’s winning start to 2022 came to a halt under controversial circumstances at East Shore Park on Saturday. Although remaining unbeaten following the 2-2 draw the Shippy were extremely aggrieved at some crucial decisions that went against them, none more so than the denial of a penalty and the second yellow card shown to Scott Orrock shortly before half-time. Orrock was clearly fouled inside the six-yard box but to everyone’s astonishment, the referee, after a delay, decided the Shippy midfielder was guilty of simulation and flashed a second yellow.
Manager Dave Costello was forced into a couple of changes with Scott Costello and Ben Anthony unavailable due to work commitments with a trialist keeper and Luke Mahady taking their places. Lewis Ross made his first start for the club replacing Matty Miller at full back.
Newburgh took the lead in the 5th minute through Michael Perrie when he gathered a through ball and slipped at passed the keeper. Despite looking suspiciously offside the goal was allowed to stand. That lead lasted barely a minute as Shaun Keatings continued his hot streak in front of goal as he curled in another beauty from the edge of the area. Dan Thomson had a shot at goal in the 13th minute having been set up by Keatings, however, Newburgh keeper Mark Robertson was able to block the shot. Perrie then headed a free-kick wide at the other end two minutes later. There was not much in the way of goalmouth action thereafter though Newburgh probably saw more off the ball and had the advantage territorially. The big incident described previously came in the 42nd minute when following a set piece, the hosts struggled to clear the ball and when it arrived at Orrock’s feet he was brought down. No penalty, a red card and the Shippy down to ten men for more than half the match was the strangest of outcomes to say the least.
Costello shored up his midfield for the start of the second half with Darrell Anthony replacing the unfortunate Mahady. Keatings saw an acrobatic effort clear the bar and at the other end the Shippy keeper gathered a low ball. The Shippy took the lead in the 73rd minute with another stunner from Keatings. The Shippy were awarded a free-kick some 25 yards out and to the right-hand side of the box. With everyone expecting a cross to the back post Keatsy curled the ball around the wall and beat keeper Robertson at his near post. The ten men had played well in the second half and deserved their lead. Shippy substitute Jordan Galloway drove a powerful low shot on target that Robertson saved confidently. Newburgh shocked the visitors by drawing level in the 90th minute when the keeper fired a free-kick from the halfway line into the Shipyard area and following confusion in the Shippy defence Andrew Reade got his head to the ball and it found the back of the net. There was still time for the Shippy to create one last chance but Anthony saw his shot blocked and Newburgh were able to clear the danger before the Shippy forwards could capitalise. Manager Costello had mixed emotions after the match when he said, “I am extremely proud of my players given the difficulties they faced throughout the match. Keatsy once again came up with a couple of great finishes”. Costy would not be drawn on the performance of the referee when asked after the match.
Newburgh Juniors: M. Robertson; G. Stapleton; L. Caulfield; A. Johal; S. Kirkham; A. Cameron; A. Reade; R. Marshall; K. Fraser; M. Perrie; D. Byrne. Subs: S. Sanaghan; R. Simpson; M. Harper; J. Doyle.
Burntisland Shipyard: A. Trialist; L. Ross; L. Henderson (M. Miller); S. Orrock; I. Millar; C. Watt; S. Keatings; D. Thomson (J. Galloway); L. Mahady (D. Anthony); J. Wilson; S. Glancy. Unused Subs: S. Strang & J. Thomson.
The Shipyard arrived in the Borders boosted by the news of two new signings and that several players had signed contract extensions, committing themselves to the club for at least another season after this one. The Shippy made light of the windy conditions as they blew Peebles away in a storming first half performance at Whitestone Park on Saturday. Backed by a magnificent travelling support the Shippy were four ahead at the interval and in all truth, it could have been a few more as the visitors were relentless in as a dominant 45 minutes as you are likely to see. A reversal of possession and dominance did not materialise in the second half as despite having the conditions in their favour Peebles didn’t threaten the Shippy goal until the 75th minute and by that time the Shipyard had created a few more chances and could have been even further ahead. Darrell Anthony and Mark James were unavailable due to the injuries they picked up last week and their places were taken by Lee Henderson and recent permanent signing Dan Thomson.
The first chance came the Shippy’s way with a minute on the clock when Shaun Keatings hooked an effort just wide and Sam Glancy shot over before the deadlock was broken in the 4th minute. Rovers’ keeper Cameron Hanratty’s poor clearance fell to Ben Anthony and Benji took control of the ball and scored with a composed finish. Jack Wilson gathered a pass at the edge of the area, turned and shot only to see Hanratty save well as he dived to his right. A second goal arrived in the 17th minute and it was a rare header from Keatings that found the net following a great delivery from Thomson. Scott Orrock shot wide from distance as the pressure on the Peebles defence remained constant. Benji scored his second in the 20th minute when Hanratty spilled a Keatings shot and the Shippy top scorer reached twenty for the season with a simple tap in. He almost completed his hat-trick in spectacular fashion; however, he was denied as his fine strike came back off the post. Hanratty pulled off good saves from Anthony and Wilson with the save from the latter being particularly impressive. Keatings then scored the fourth in the 41st minute with a low shot into the corner after Anthony had set him up. Keatsy notched a brace for the second week running as he kept up his fine run of scoring.
The Shipyard continued to hold the upper hand in the second half with Iain Millar and Craig Watt dominant at the back for the visitors, with Rovers getting no change out of them whatsoever. The Shippy had a claim for a penalty turned down in the 62nd minute when it appeared Anthony was pushed in the back, however, the fact that he remained on his feet probably swayed the referee’s decision. Wilson and Thomson both had efforts from close range with big Jack’s being blocked and Dan’s strike saved by Hanratty. Manager Dave Costello made four changes as the half wore on with a debut for new signing Lewis Ross who arrived from Kirkcaldy last week. Peebles finally threatened in the 75th minute when Gary Tickle smashed a fine effort off the post and substitute Kyle Kivlichan headed over from inside the box. The Shippy saw out the final few minutes without any further chances for the hosts as they kept a very well deserved clean sheet. After the match the manager said “That was an excellent performance in very difficult conditions. Peebles were impressive when we played them at home, so to come down here and play like that was really pleasing. The first half was exactly what I wanted and for me the second was just as impressive and we maintained control of the match and created more opportunities.” He had plenty of praise for his players when he added “Glancy and Orrock dominated the midfield, so did Rooney and Millzy who were outstanding in defence and although Benji and Keatsy scored the goals Jack and Dan were very instrumental in our attacking play. Indeed, everyone played a part in a great performance.”
Next Saturday we are on the road again as we travel to East Shore Park to face Newburgh Juniors in a league match. Kick-off is at 2pm.
Peebles Rovers: C. Hanratty; L. Andrew; G. Tickle; D. Skinner; D. Anderson; R. Lamb; S. Latto; H. McGill; L. MacLean; K. Mitchell; M. Kinross. Subs: J. Dodds; J. Sykes; K. Kivlichan; J. Mackay.
Burntisland Shipyard: S. Costello; M. Miller (L. Ross); L. Henderson; S. Orrock; I. Millar; C. Watt; S. Keatings (J. Thomson); D. Thomson (S. Strang); B. Anthony (L. Mahady); J. Wilson; S. Glancy. Unused Subs: J. Galloway & R. Connor.
An absolute screamer from Shaun Keatings in the 93rd minute sparked wild scenes of joy amongst the Shippy contingent as the goal secured a vital three points for the visitors. Having twice been behind and levelled on both occasions the Shippy hit the front for the first time with barely a minute of added time left to play, leaving the hosts no time to recover. Although there were five goals in the match there was only one save of note from either keeper, that was when Scott Costello tipped a shot over the bar in the 7th minute. In fairness Uni keeper Alex McMahon didn’t have much more to do other than pick the ball out of the net three times. After the match manager Dave Costello was naturally delighted and he said “Full credit to the players for battling to the end and getting a vital three points. Keatsy took both his goals superbly and what a ball from Dan Thomson to set up his first. I thought Rooney and Big Millzy were outstanding at the back, dealing with almost everything that was thrown at them.” He went on to add “We are going to have a lot of away games in the next few weeks so it was great to start that run with a good win at a very difficult venue.”
Thankfully there was no snow this time following the late postponement of the previously scheduled fixture; however, it was still bitterly cold on the west side of the capital. The Shippy were a goal behind before the crowd had settled into their seats as a ball through the inside left channel was gathered by Alex Chingwalu and he fired the ball low into the corner giving Costello no chance. The Shipyard were awarded a penalty when a shot from the edge of the box hit the arm of a Heriot Watt defender and big Jack Wilson made no mistake from the spot, sending McMahon the wrong way. Costello then tipped that previously mentioned effort over the bar and on the quarter hour mark the students hit the woodwork as they enjoyed a period of dominance. Neither team created anything of note in the remainder of the first half.
Wilson shot over at the start of the second half for the visitors and Alasdair Shrive drove wide for the hosts. Costello held a shot from Russell Cairns in the 62nd minute before the Shippy were dealt a double blow in the 68th minute. Mark James pulled up with a calf injury as he chased back to stop a cross and from the resultant delivery the students regained the lead when Justin Hogg shot home from inside the box. James was replaced by Luke Mahady with Wilson dropping back into defence. The Shippy had it all to do again and they went close when Millar headed a Sam Glancy cross wide. The equaliser came in the 77th minute when substitute D. Thomson fired a great ball across the box to Keatings who drove the ball home. With the game heading towards a draw as full time loomed, Keatings produced a sublime finish as he cut in from the left and struck a dipping shot over McMahon and into the back of the net. Keatsy was off and running as his teammates chased him all over the pitch as they tried to celebrate with him. Once things had calmed down, the match continued for around another minute before the ref blew for full-time.
Next week we travel down to the borders to face Peebles Rovers at Whitestone Park with the match kicking off at 2pm.
Heriot Watt University: A. McMahon; J. Hogg; E. Kerr; J. Thomson; J. Wishart; A. Shrive; I. Mackie; C. Smith; R. Cairns; G. MacDonald; A. Chingwalu. Subs: C. Stewart; S. Peggie; J. Kennedy; K. Richmond; L. Morton; A. McCreadie; K. Real de Asua de Azua.

The Shipyard returned to action after a long layoff as they welcomed Lochgelly Albert to Recreation Park on Saturday and the home support in the crowd of 142 went home happy with the Shippy recording a comfortable 3-0 win. It was a match packed full of incidents with goals, penalties and red cards to keep the crowd entertained on a fine January afternoon. There was even a partial floodlight failure in the closing stages, though, thankfully the natural light was sufficient enough to see the game through to a conclusion.
There was a welcome return to the team for Lee Henderson who had been out since the end of July with a broken arm and new loan signing Luke Mahady took a place on the bench from where he made his Shipyard debut.
The Shipyard had a chance in the 5th minute when Jack Wilson got on the end of a Craig Watt free-kick, however, his header lacked the direction to trouble Albert keeper Gregor Brown. Darrell Anthony curled an effort wide as the home team dominated the early proceedings. The Shipyard had a penalty claim for handball ignored before a fine move in the 18th minute almost broke the deadlock. D. Anthony passed to Wilson who then laid the ball into the path of B. Anthony and the latter’s shot was finger tipped to safety by keeper Brown. Lochgelly were dealt a blow in the 21st minute when they were reduced to ten men. Local lad Joe Meldrum received a second yellow card when he pulled back Sam Glancy as the Shippy midfielder drove forward. Brown pulled off two great saves around the half hour mark as he denied Wilson and Henderson in quick succession as the Shippy piled the pressure on. Dean Hunter headed a Shaun Keatings effort over his own bar in the 34th minute but the Shipyard were not to be denied as they took the lead two minutes later when Wilson bundled the ball home having beaten Brown to the loose ball.
The second half got off to a sensational start as the Shippy were awarded a penalty after Hunter was adjudged to have fouled Iain Millar as a corner was delivered into the box. Having already been cautioned Hunter received a second yellow leaving his team to see out the remaining forty minutes with nine men. To make their task even more difficult Wilson smashed home the spot kick to put the Shipyard two ahead. Credit must go to Lochgelly as they did not fold and maintained their shape and discipline and limited the Shippy to very few opportunities, though, they rarely troubled Scott Costello in the Shipyard goals. B. Anthony was unlucky to see his drive brilliantly tipped onto the bar and over by Brown, however, Benji got his goal a few minutes later as he fired the ball home after a Glancy shot had been parried out to him.
Next Saturday (22/01/2022) we travel to Oriam for a re-arranged league match against Heriot Watt University after the original match was postponed due to snow. Kick-off at the John Brydson Arena is at 3pm.
Burntisland Shipyard: S. Costello; M. Miller (M. James); L. Henderson (D. Thomson); S. Orrock; I. Millar; C. Watt; S. Keatings (J. Galloway); D. Anthony (S. Strang); B. Anthony; J. Wilson (L. Mahady); S. Glancy. Unused Subs: M. Douglas & J. Thomson.

The Shipyard’s erratic form continued on Saturday as they went down 3-1 to Oakley United at Recreation Park. Despite taking an early lead through Ben Anthony’s seventeenth goal of the season, they were only able to hold that advantage for three minutes as Oakley quickly levelled and the visitors went on to build on that and eventually ran out deserved winners. The Shippy were without the injured Ryan O’Donnell and the unavailable Sam Glancy for the match with youngsters Jordan Thomson and Dan Thomson coming into the starting eleven.
The pitch was heavy at kick-off following the heavy rain that fell in the build up to the match and obviously it deteriorated as the match wore on. Oakley had the first chance in the opening minute as Scott Costello saved well from Stephen Day. The next chance fell to the Shippy in the fifth minute and from a corner they took the lead. Oakley felt their keeper was fouled as he attempted to punch the ball clear but played continued and Benji poked the ball home from very close range. The visitors were level in the eighth minute and again the goal came from a corner with Craig Martin afforded plenty of space to head the ball home. The game ebbed and flowed for the next twenty minutes or so before Oakley went ahead. A cut back from the bye line was met by Jack Cowan in the centre of goal and he knocked the ball home. Oakley finished the half in the ascendency and it took a couple of good blocks and two saves from Costello to deny the visitors.
The Shipyard made a change at the break with Matty Miller coming on for Jordan Thomson. Oakley were awarded a penalty in the 46th minute after a foul in the box and Martin scored from the spot firing the ball low into the corner of the net making it 3-1. Three minutes later the Shipyard were awarded a penalty of their own when the referee judged there had been interference when a free-kick was played into the area. Shaun Keatings stepped up to take the kick, however, the ball cleared the bar, the net behind the goals and the clubhouse before landing just short of the graveyard. The Shipyard never really threatened Brett Young in the Oakley goals; indeed, it was the visitors who went closest to scoring when them missed a couple of very good chances.
Next week we travel to Prestonpans to face Preston Athletic in a league match. Kick-off at Pennypit Park is at 2.30pm.
Burntisland Shipyard: S. Costello; S. Orrock; J. Thomson (M. Miller); M. James; I. Millar; C. Watt; S. Keatings; D. Anthony; B. Anthony; J. Wilson; D. Thomson (J. Galloway). Unused Subs: S. Strang & R. Connor.
