Late rally secures all three points.
The Shipyard produced a stirring fightback to take three vital points against nine man Easthouses Lily MW at Newbattle Complex on Saturday. Goals from substitute Stuart Walton and Jack Wilson secured the victory as the home side lost their discipline in the last 20 minutes resulting in them finishing the game with nine men, as the Shippy pressed for an equaliser and ultimately a winner. Manager Dave Costello made three changes from last week’s game against Glenrothes with Shaun Keatings suspended, Scott Costello unavailable and Walton dropping to the bench. Mikey Couser, Scott Orrock and Jack Wilson came in to replace them.
Easthouses took the lead in the 10th minute following a free-kick and despite the Shippy seeing plenty of the ball they could not fashion an equaliser in the first half. As the second half wore on and still no sign of a goal coming Costy made a triple substitution with 25 minutes remaining with Jordan Galloway, Raymond Crichton and Walton coming on for Matty Miller, Dan Thomson and Sandy Strang. Shortly after this change the Shipyard were handed a numerical advantage as Easthouses were reduced to 10 men. The Shippy were now exerting a lot of pressure on the hosts and their discipline let them down again as a second player saw red giving the visitors a two man advantage. Almost immediately the Shipyard drew level as Walton scored his first goal for the Club with ten minutes remaining. Although the clock was ticking down the Shippy remained composed and disciplined and they got their reward when Wilson headed home for a late winner.
Manager Dave Costello was relieved after the match when he said “That was as poor as we have been in a long time, particularly the first half, and I had a few choice words to say to them at the interval. At this stage of the season and where we find ourselves, it’s all about the points rather than the performance, so I am relieved that we got there in the end.” He went on to say, “We deserved to win as we created chances and limited them to very few so in that respect I am happy but other than two or three good individual performances there in not many more positives I can take.”
There is no game scheduled for next Saturday but the boys will be back in action on 07/05/2022 as we make the long trip to face Hawick Royal Albert United. The Club will be running a bus to this match and details of arrangements will be announced in due course through our social media platforms.
