Eyemouth hit for six in Shipyard stroll.
Although Kevin Masson and Adam Doig shared five goals between them, Shipyard Coach Tommy Roxburgh was quick to point out to the players as they warmed down, that this was very much a team performance as every player involved played his part in the 6-0 thrashing of Eyemouth United at a wet and windy Warner Park. Manager Alex Lowe echoed Tommy’s sentiments when he said “It was a great performance from the boys today, good handling, distribution and two or three good saves from Jordan. A tight defence that gave up few chances, a hard-working and creative midfield and good finishing from our forwards, though if you want to be greedy they could have scored more. That was our best performance so far this season, in difficult windy conditions here at Eyemouth. I was very pleased with the teams display today and hopefully we will take a bit of confidence into next week’s game against Peebles”.
Kev Masson gave Eyemouth defence a torrid afternoon.
With the elements behind them the Shippy took the initiative from the off and in the 5th minute Masson saw his 30 yard free-kick crash back off the bar. The Shipyard took the lead in the 12th minute with a neat goal from another free-kick. Dale Robertson flighted the ball into the box, Ewan Henderson cut it back from the by-line and Doig was on hand to turn the ball home from 10 yards out. Masson made it 2-0 in the 20th minute when he gathered the ball, rounded the keeper and eventually poked the ball home. Masson supplied the third goal after 31 minutes when he crossed for Doig to knock home from close range. The 4th goal 7 minutes before half-time was a brilliant solo effort from Masson as he beat three Eyemouth defenders in the box then coolly stroked the ball home. Craig Lowe, Darrell Anthony and Doig again all went close as the Shippy dominated the half. United’s only response was a shot from Sean Campbell that drifted wide.
John Paul McPhail replaced Lowe at half-time with the latter having to leave due to work commitments but all credit to Craig for travelling in the first place. Anthony hit the bar with a fine strike early in the second half and McPhail was unfortunate when he could not steer the rebound on target. Masson saw three attempts to complete his hat-trick thwarted, twice by the keeper and once when a free-kick narrowly cleared the crossbar. In between these efforts Jordan Mushet showed good concentration when he tipped over a speculative long range effort and produced a better save when he denied Eyemouth from the resultant corner. Anthony showed great skill at the edge of the box to engineer shooting opportunity, however for the youngster, his shot went agonisingly wide. Masson completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute when he tapped home from close range after McPhail set up the easy chance for him. Both Anthony and Doig went close again before Pete Bell rounded off the scoring in the 81st minute when he produced a fine finish from another McPhail pass. The match also saw Ben Couper make his debut for the Shipyard having signed during the week.
