Peebles Rovers 3 Burntisland Shipyard 2

Poor defending angers Shippy manager.

Manager Grant Brough didn’t mince his words when he was asked for his thoughts on his, albeit under-strength, team’s performance after the 3-2 defeat at the hands of Peebles Rovers on Saturday. He was bitterly disappointed to lose the match having led 2-1 ten minutes into the second half as he said “Today we let ourselves down badly. Our defending was criminal after getting back in the game and then going ahead, we really should have been able to see the game out from that position.”

The casualty list was lengthy with Callum McAulay, Johnny Galloway, Tam Graham and Reece Brown out injured. Add in the unavailable Brian Breen, Ryan O’Donnell, Brodie Hamilton, Lee Halpin and the suspended Dean Anderson, all adding up to leave Brough with a major selection headache.

Grant Brough was not a happy man.

The Shipyard went behind in the 11th minute after some poor defending that had Brough annoyed at this early stage and his mood did not improve as his team squandered decent chances as the interval approached. The Shippy came out rejuvenated in the second half and quickly drew level from the penalty spot in the 50th minute through John Martin, after Jordan Galloway had been upended in the box. In the 55th minute John Martin then beat three Peebles defenders before firing low past the on-rushing keeper to put Shipyard in front. The Shippy then had several chances to extended their lead but failed to take these chances and were made to rue the misses after yet more poor defending from the shipyard rear-guard.  Peebles were reduced to ten men but that advantage did not last long as centre back Craig Anderson was then sent off for what the referee deemed to be a last man challenge, which surprised most in the ground as it appeared he won the ball. More miserable defending from the Shipyard continued and with five mins to go they yet again they failed to defend a Peebles attack and conceded the winner. The game fizzled out and shipyard were left to make the trip home with nothing to show for their efforts.
