2010/2011 Season

Burntisland Shipyard. 2 Leven United. 5

The Shipyard’s poor early season form continued with a defeat to leven United at Recreation Park, however, it was not until Leven scored from the penalty spot in 74 minutes that the shipyard were beaten. Without the injured players Johnstone, Johnston, Cook and Muirhead plus some more unavailable the squad was down to the bare bones. This gave some of the younger players more playing time and it took Lee Henderson only 5 minutes to make his mark. Whether he meant it or not his cross from the left hand side flew over Leven keeper Seath to give the Shipyard the lead. A minute later Chalmers was called into action and produced a good save. McCue was next to have an effort for the Shipyard but, his free-kick was straight at the keeper. Leven equalised in the 16 minute when a corner was head flicked on at the near post by Mark Brown and it found its way into the net. In 27 minutes a free-kick from Leven was allowed to get through the defence and Chalmers could only parry the ball out to Ian Barrett who knocked the ball in to make it 2 – 1.

The Shipyard made a disastrous start to the second half when an innocuous ball was allowed to bounce twice in the 6 yard box before Steven Brown had the easy task to nod into the net. Chalmers kept the Shipyard in with a shout with another good save in the 51st minute and 2 minutes later the Shipyard made it 3 – 2 with a highly controversial goal. Seath clearing a back pass hit the ball against the inrushing Josh Williams, who had turned his back and the ball appeared to hit his elbow and fly into the net. Much to Leven’s disgust the referee gave the goal. In 59 minutes the Shipyard saw a shot deflected for a fruitless corner. Then twice in a matter of minutes Leven went close with a header and then a shot, both just going wide of the post. In 74 minutes Leven were awarded a penalty when Drummond brought down the Leven attacker in the box. Steven Brown stepped up to fire the ball passed Chalmers. A free-kick from T. Williams was easily held by Seath after 82 minutes, then with almost the last kick of the ball Lee Scott bundled home Leven’s 5th goal after Chalmers blocked another effort.

With a couple of new signings in the pipeline, hopefully the injured players regaining fitness and the midweek fixtures over, manager Billy Whitehead is hoping for fortunes to change soon.

Burntisland Shipyard. 0 Fair City. 2

Fair City gained quick revenge for the midweek defeat to the Shipyard with a deserved victory in the League Cup at Recreation Park. The Shipyard made one change to the team from Tuesday with Mark Hamilton free from suspension replacing the injured Neil Johnston, though he was able to take a place on the bench.

After the whirlwind start to Tuesday’s match, this one was a lot quieter with the first chance of note coming after 24 minutes when McCue shot over from the edge of the box. Two minutes later Chalmers was called into action when he touched a shot from R. Blyth round the post for a corner. In 27 minutes Chalmers again had to look lively, turning a shot away for a corner. At the other end a lob from McCue caused a bit of panic in the City defence but, his effort drifted wide of the post. In the 39th minute Robson in the City goal saved a shot from McNeill. One minute later Chalmers again had to push an effort round the post. From the resultant corner Fair City took the lead when the ball was allowed to reach beyond the back post where Jay drilled the ball into the net, although Chalmers did get a hand to it.

Two minutes into the second half the Shipyard were awarded a free-kick outside the box. Muirhead was looking to repeat his fine goal on Tuesday but this time his shot was straight at the keeper. In 58 minutes Muirhead was again involved in the action, this time the shot from the left hand side of the box scrapped passed the far post with Robson beaten. The shipyard were pushing for an equaliser and it should have come in the 76th minute when T. Williams headed wide from 6 yards after a McCue cross. In the 80th minute Henderson blasted over from 18 yards after Fair City failed to clear properly. The Shipyard had a penalty claim turned down when T. Williams appeared to be impeded going for a high ball in the box. In the 84th minute Fair City had a great chance to seal it, with the Shipyard defence looking for offside the City forward allowed the shipyard defence to get back and block his effort. However, City did seal the tie in the 87th minute when sub Gormley hit a spectacular shot from around 30 yards high into the net, which was almost as impressive as his celebration.

For the second week in a row at home, the Shipyard again failed to create many chances and this is causing concern for manager Whitehead as he seeks to add more fire power to his attack.

Fair City. 2 Burntisland Shipyard. 3

The Shipyard recovered from Saturday’s poor result to record a fine win against Fair City in a hard fought and pulsating match in Perth. Billy Whitehead made three changes to the team from Saturday with McCue, McNeill and Henderson coming in for Tasker, Drummond and Bell.

The match was barely 2 minutes old when the Shipyard took the lead, Brian Muirhead crashed home a free-kick from 25 yards. However, the lead was short lived as Fair City equalised 3 minutes later, when a corner reached the back post and was nodded into the net. The game was moving at a frantic pace and 2 minutes later the Shipyard were ahead again. After good work by McCue, Lee Henderson was on hand at the back post to bundle the ball over the line. In the 10th minute the Shipyard almost scored again when a shot from McNeill hit the bar. The Shipyard continued on the front foot and after Johnston rounded keeper Robson, his effort was cleared to Grieve whose header drifted wide of the far post with Henderson trying to knock the ball in. Fair City almost scored in the 33rd minute but, Chalmers saved and McCue was on hand to clear off the line. Fair City were more prominent now and Chalmers was called into action again, this time blocking at his near post. In first half injury time the Shipyard conceded a poor goal. The defence tried to let the ball go out for a goal kick but the Fair City player got a foot in and squared for his team mate to make it 2 – 2.

The second half continued at the same pace but no chances were created until the 59th minute when Chalmers held a shot from the edge of the box. 2 minutes later Chalmers was beaten to a through ball outside his box but, with the pace taken off the ball, Cook was able to get back and clear. The Shipyard were more on the back foot in the second half but Grieve almost put the Shipyard ahead again, when after a fine turn his shot was saved by Robson. In 73 minutes Chalmers pulled off another good save turning a fierce shot round the post for a corner. 4 minutes from time the Shipyard scored a sensational winner when Steven Tasker gathered the ball at the corner of the 18 yard box and a hit a volley across and over the keeper and into the far corner of the net. It was a goal fit to win any match.

After the match manager Whitehead said “ the players have got to show this commitment and attitude in ever match.”

Burntisland Shipyard. 0 Bowhill Rovers. 5

The Shipyard made a disastrous start to the season with a humiliating 5 goal defeat to Bowhill at Recreation Park. Both teams were under strength due to suspensions, unavailability and injury but it was Bowhill who won at a canter.

After an uneventful first 17 minutes Bowhill took the lead when a free-kick into the box was left by everyone for the unmarked Bowhill player to score easily. 3 minutes later it was 2 – 0 when again a ball into the box was not cleared and the Bowhill forward had the easiest of tasks to score. Johnston should have reduced the deficit when put through on goal by Bell but, his effort was well saved by Lennox. It was 3 – 0 in 28 minutes when the Shipyard defence switched off again to concede another soft goal. Bowhill scored another goal in the 33rd minute with the Shipyard defence posted missing yet again. A header from Bell that was easily saved was the only response from the shipyard as the first half closed.

Chalmers pulled off a good save at the start of the second half, pushing the ball round the post for a corner. In 56 minutes he was beaten again as Bowhill scored their fifth goal. There was to be no further scoring though sub Couper should have scored a consolation for the Shipyard but, Lennox saved with his legs. In the final minute T. Williams was sent off for his second bookable offence by referee Crichton who had a very good game.

Teams: Burntisland Shipyard: Chalmers; Grieve; Muirhead; T. Williams; Cook; Ferguson; Tasker; J. Williams; Johnston; Bell (Couper); Drummond (Henderson).  Sub; Houston.

Bowhill Rovers: Lennox; Mayne; Ritchie; S. Mellon; Hindley; Mackie; Thomson; Wright; Reilly; Doyle; Gay. Subs: Chapman; C. Mellon; Webster; Baird.

Referee: S Crichton

Burntisland Shipyard. 1 Dunfermline City. 3

A youthful Shipyard team that included 4 teenagers turned in a very poor performance against a City side managed by former Shipyard player Myles Allan. On a very wet surface City took an early lead after a slip in the Shipyard defence and doubled their lead with a headed goal in the first half. Although the Shipyard saw plenty of the ball, nothing was created in front of goal, with the Dunfermline keeper having little to do. Even after a half time roasting from the manager, the Shipyard still created few scoring chances and City soon made it 3-0. The Shipyard did get on the score sheet late on, courtesy of an own goal and then enjoyed their best spell in the match but, Dunfermline City deserved their win and played some good football.
